SD Picture quality on TiVo compared to V+HD

I really want TiVo, but am trying to weigh up all the pros and cons. I don't want to take the plunge if there is an element to it that will be worse than what I have now (SA V+HD). One of these elements is the SD picture quality.

I see lots of arguments on forums regarding the standard definition picture quality on TiVo compared to V+HD. So would like to get the views from all the existing VM TiVo owners on this forum as to whether the SD picture quality is better, worse or the same.

Thank you.

I can't see a difference between the SD pictures of the two boxes to be honest. I do think the HD pq is better than the Samsung V+ though. I rarely watch anything in SD anymore as with the 1TB hard drive I can record everything in HD.

Re: SD Picture quality on TiVo compared to V+HD

It's really difficult to say because maybe my perception has changed. When I first got my installation date I basically deleted all the SD content off my V+ box and from then on have pretty much exclusively watched HD ever since.

Maybe I have just got so used to HD that SD just looks worse now ? If anything I would say it's a little softer. Particularly low bit-rate stuff. But really SD is a non-issue for me, I so rarely watch SD stuff now. 1 TB hard drive 3x thumbs up

Thanks to those that voted and left comments. 6 out of 9 said it's about the same, so that's quite pleasing and re-assuring.

That is spot on, I especially agree with the picture being a little softer.

My personal gripe on PQ is when people buy TV's that are too big for the room it is in. They enjoy boasting to their mates down the pub that they have just bought a 50" TV then they wonder why the SD picture is so poor when they can only sit about 6 or 7 foot away

Bigger is always better! At least that's what the missus said when she ran off with the milkman

Re: SD Picture quality on TiVo compared to V+HD

I wish I could change my vote I voted for about the same. However, I have just swapped my TiVo for my V+ so that the kids can order and watch wrestlemania on the plasma.

The upscaling on my Tivo is far superior to my sa V+, its not how I remembered it at all. I had come to the conclusion that TiVo's HD was better but always thought SD was about the same. Maybe its because I moved the V+ to a smaller bedroom tv that I thought sd was the same, who knows.

Regards

John.
