'Gay cure' Apple iPhone app: more than 80,000 complain

Apple deemed the app to have 'no objectionable content'

Apple is under fire from gay rights activists after it approved an iPhone and iPad app targeting "homosexual strugglers".

More than 80,000 people have signed a petition against the so-called "gay cure" app, which Apple deemed to have "no objectionable content".

Exodus International, the pro-Christian group behind the app, promotes the "ex-gay" movement, encouraging people to change their sexuality. The app gives users "freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus", according to the group.

Apple had not returned a request for comment at the time of publication.

Ben Summerskill, chief executive of gay rights group Stonewall, said: "At Stonewall, we've all been on this app since 8am and we can assure your readers it's having absolutely no effect.

You could describe a lot of stuff on TV in exactly the same way. At least nobody is likely to stumble across this app - they would need to choose to search for and download it first.

Which would imply perhaps they want help to change. Therefore, if it works for them and makes them happy, why is it so bad?

Depends if they want to change because they are geniunely unhappy or they feel they are being forced to by outside influence..

That's a far bigger issue than an iOS app though Stu.

Stonewall's objection to this is deeply ironic. They say that young gay people who are confused about ther sexuality should not be exposed, basically, to the wrong opinions (ones that Stonewall disagrees with). The irony is that Stonewall campaigned fiercely against laws which were designed to prevent young people who may be confused about their sexuality from having a homosexual lifestyle promoted to them by local government, and they campaigned for equalisation of the age of consent on the basis that 16 year olds are quite capable of knowing their sexuality and making mature decisions about it.

I would have to say that I would be surprised if people were unsure of their sexuality at 16. I think it's naive to think that someones sexual preferences can be changed and the idea that homosexuality can be 'cured'.

Maybe, maybe not. The point is, people should be free to try if they wish, and others should be free to offer to help them try.
