Best gaming router to buy to run 3 ps3's

Hi I'm havingnproblems with my talk talk router and wanting to get a different one but don't no what to buy as I need a high speed gaming router to run 3 playstations on as with our talk talk router we just have none stop connection lose on all games and hoping if with buy a new router it will sort the problem out please can someone give me some advice on what to do as we have the d-link dsl-2780 talk talk router help me

Well, the D-Link is an N-class router, so you shouldn't have any problems, but for gaming its usually recommended to not use WiFi where possible (due to occasional latency/dropouts that are possible).

Are you sure it's your router and not your internet connection itself? Any N-Class router would do to be honest (they are all built to the same Wireless Specs)

Dropping connections could mean a few different things...

Where is your router located in relation to your PS3s/other Wireless Kit?
What kind (age) of house do you live in? (Older houses can suffer due to the thick walls)?
What connection speed do you get when you do speedtests from a PC/Mac?

AFAIK there isn't a "gaming" router as such, and speed is dependent on many factors. You can only guarantee pings etc within your local LAN.

Well we get 7mbps and one of the ps3's is wired but still loses connection and the other two are upstairs but one is wired through the power plug things and the other one hardly picks up connection half the time the house is a normal 3 bed house but we have the same problem when ever we connect an iPhone or laptop I was wondering if we bought a router with a 300mbps transfer speed would it make a difference

PS3's and iPhones are only WiFi G anyway so 300mbps wouldn't make any difference.

Ok but what can we do to help with the connection problems as we all play online gaming and usually are on at the same time

You need to establish if this is your router, the method of connection between the router and PS3s, or more likely the internet connection itself.

Gaming does require a good connection. Whilst 7Mb wil do OK for general internet activity, even with a few computers connected (you may see some slightly slow page loads at times) and you could well get away with one PS3 running, once a couple of you are on, you are each competing for bandwidth. Downsteam, i.e. information coming in to you, may cope, but upstream will be pushed. Add a third gamer to the mix and things will get interesting.

Connect a single PS3 direct to the ADSL modem, disconnecting your current router, or if it's a combined router / modem, then disable any other connections other than one wired PS3. If all works fine, check it at different times of the day, especially an evening peak, and see if it stands up. If it falls over then definitely blame your internet.

If that is OK, temporarily connect a second PS3, wired, not wireless to the router and play them both together. If that is OK, then your wireless or network on the LAN side of the router is no good. If it isn't OK, then I'd suggest your internet hasn't got the capacity to deal with two gamers.

A DSL line with 7 meg down I'd expect to have upload in the rage of 400-700k which can get pushed with 2 or 3 devices and modern games, that can use up to 150-300k each. But that would cause slowness, not dropouts.

You can't boost the speed, unless you can find a better package. Your ADSL supplier will have sold you a connection usually marketed only on the basis of the maximum theoretical download speed. Hidden in the smaller print will be details of the maximum upload speed which is usually only a small proportion of the download. Depending on the quality of the phone line and distance of use you only actually get a part of these maximum speeds. For example my office has ADSL 2 which is theoretically 24Mb but we average around 12Mb and yet the exchange is only 200metres from us.

Whilst most ISPs have been concentrating on the headline download speeds for many, especially gamers, upload is important too. We are now seeing Virgin Media Cable making some improvements and rollingn out a doubling of upload spees over their cable network, even so this will still be a proportion of the download, and not equal to. That is the limitation of the broadband system. To get equal uplaod and downlaod one mores to SDSL or leased line technology.

Assuming your current bandwith is the problem, the only real solution is to upgrade your broadband package, or if no upgrade is available, get a second broadband line into the property.

If upload speed *is* the problem (which we don't have confirmed yet) then switching ISP would be the best option.

Talktalk quotes their upstream speed as 448k for non-LLU and 1mbps for LLU, whereas O2/Be offer up to 2.5mbps with their "Pro" LLU package.
