Opening a Wireless Network.
Hiya!
I was wondering, what would happen, if, I switch on my spare wireless router, and, without connecting it to my Internet, what would happen, this would only be a test, if people connect to it, what could they do to eachothers PCs?, is there a way to isolate each connection so one user couldnt see the other? I'm not doing this to gain anything out of this (apart from the knowledge), it's just to understand what would happen
Thank you
-xoxo Amy.

not a lot would happen lol
If you had pcs connected and someone did sniff it out what could be done depends on the security of each PC. For example they could have passwords or permissions set.
Chances are though even if it was a fully up and running network with net access the worst thats likely to happen is someone uses your net. There are obvious data security issues but the majority of people wouldnt be interested in browsing your shares

Re: Opening a Wireless Network.
So the router would be on a network connected to various computers, but the network itself is not connected to the internet?
If your wireless is unsecured then anyone in range could find it and connect. What they are able to do after that will depend on the level of security you have set on your router and computers. Ultimately if they are really nasty and have hacking tools you've given them an easy inroad for them to delve into your little secrets...
If you haven't changed any passwords on your router, it will be easy for anyone to mess with it's settings.
If your computers are largely unsecured, you have shared folders and data, it will be easy for someone to access that. Potentially, if the shares are read and write, they could put stuff on your computers quite easily. If your computers allow remote user access then a user could, especially if your user name and password are low, perhaps even run stuff on your PC.
Bottom line, unsecure wireless is asking for trouble.

Yeah but the range of wifi isnt that great so unless you have dodgy neighbours or are unlucky enough to get some cyber crim or hacker drive past your house sniffing chances are your gonna be ok
Of course security is important and you do not want to take risks but you also should not be paranoid about it

Re: Opening a Wireless Network.
Hiya
The wireless router is by it's self, my network isn't connected to it, all I have done is changed the router password and opened the wireless, nothing else, the router is simply plugged into the wall, no other cables are plugged into it apart from just the power cable, this is only a test to understand what, if anything, will happen between the router and any connected users (not me ).
Thank you
-xoxo Amy.

Re: Opening a Wireless Network.
They should be able to connect to other PC's via the wifi as in the end it'll be acting like a hub with WAP..
On the wifi settings of the PC you should be able to specify the connection you want so as long as the channels don;t interfere they should be free to use either network based on their choice and security

Re: Opening a Wireless Network.
Hiya Again
Daft question; is it possible that when people connect to the router; is there a way I can keep each connection secure from a sniffer?
Thank you

Good Morning
Would that be to the connected computers or the router?
Thank you

Re: Opening a Wireless Network.
Both, If you add security to the router then only computers with the same security will be able to access it.. Won't stop the sniffers but will make what they sniff unreadable

Re: Opening a Wireless Network.
no wireless lan should be ruled by its clients, thats bad policy. the access point should be in charge else its attackable from far to many methods
if your looking into this for knowlege be wery of the law and what can happen if you have clients connecting and your running even a open router just for that purpose, best you test it from your pwn systems (own consent to do so etc ,D )
as for learning, if you really want to get a insite into this then use a laptop or pc with a wireless card that can run in master mode, i wouldnt worry about windows shared folders being attacked as there are far better ways into a machine.
id try running something along the lines of karmetasploit on your own systems and you can connect to it and see what it does back to you at same time = more knowledge and legal (be wery if someone else did connect however lol)
