Pensioner shunted car banned and fined.

Quote:
Ronald Pemberton, 83, used his Peugeot to push a Ford Ka which had parked in front of his lock-up.
The incident caused chaos as the Ka was shunted into the road outside a primary school.
Two weeks later he was caught repeating the offence outside Cabot Primary School in St Paul’s, Bristol, by pushing a silver Mazda into the road.

Pemberton, of St Paul’s, pleaded guilty at Bristol Magistrates’ Court earlier this year to dangerous driving for the first incident on November 24, 2009.
He denied the second offence on December 9 last year but was found guilty by a jury.
Recorder Nicholas Rowland banned Pemberton from driving for 12 months and ordered him to pay nearly £2,000 in fines, court costs and compensation.
I think if it wasn't for the fact that it was outside a school. he wouldn't have got such a severe punishment.

Seems a fair punishment to me for being a deliberate menace on the road

Re: Pensioner shunted car banned and fined.

If it went as it looks on the film. the Ka would only be there for a few seconds. as the guy comes back as he pushes it onto the road.
it looks worse with all the people standing around and the cars stopping on the zig zags to watch what was going on.

If he hadn't done it twice, I suspect he wouldn't have got such a severe punishment. Once could be a mistake. Twice in the same area probably isn't.

Re: Pensioner shunted car banned and fined.

For years, a very dear elderly friend of ours lived opposite a local primary school and was routinely abused by inconsiderate drivers who blocked her driveway at school drop-off and pick-up times. In the afternoons it was common for a certain element of parents to turn up 30-40 mins early simply to park as close to the school as possible and with no regard for anyone else. "I'm only going to be a few minutes" was the usual initial response but that's really no use to someone who needs access to their drive there and then and has to put up with this sort of thing all the time. Often the abuse then became far worse and intimidating when she'd ask them to move to let her out or let a visitor in and there were times when cars were just left across her driveway.

I'm not condoning what he did and don't know if this sort of inconsiderate behaviour has any bearing on what happened but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it did. Parking problems around schools are always a problem and enforcement very patchy so I'm sure those frequently affected sometimes go too far purely out of frustration.

Re: Pensioner shunted car banned and fined.

I live a 3 minute walk from the local juniors school.I frequently can't find a space in front of my house around 8-9 am and from 2.30-3.30 pm.

In fact a couple of mothers frequently park their car in the morning, bog off for the next few hours and then come back and move their cars when school closes.

As we are the only residential street in the immediate area that has double yellow lines on one side and most no rear access for parking(because the school is right behind our gardens) this sort of behaviour is very unwelcome.

It's not as if they HAVE to drive to school,it's not that far to walk even from the three new estates. It's not even a mile in total.

If I knew exactly where they lived I think I might just inconvenience them for a while with my own car.

Re: Pensioner shunted car banned and fined.

The only route to-and-from my daughter's college is past a primary school and at school run times it's atrocious With cars double-parked, parked on pavements, parked on single and double yellow lines, parked on zig zags and even parked on the pedestrian crossing for minutes at a time!

The local police station is less than half a mile away, but they never appear to shift on or book these inconsiderate/illegal parkers.

Re: Pensioner shunted car banned and fined.

I had an incident yesterday in the street where i was working concerning myself a stroppy family and a disabled parking bay
Basicly the street is used as a overflow carpark for newcastle general so cars are parked both sides of the street from 8oclock onwards ,i had a door to fit in the street i arrived at about 2 oclock and the only available space was a disabled parking bay about 30yrds from the house so i parked up and started work ,about 1/2 hour later the ocupior of the house where the bay is turned up and started shouting and screaming that i was parked in his bay ,i politely told him it wasn't his bay and anyone could park there as the disabled bays are only advisory,by this time the son ,wife and daughter had got out of the car and were shouting and screaming that it was their bay put there for the mother (the gobbiest one)and they were going to get my van clamped or towed if i didn't move it ,they phoned the police and the parking control who turned up and told them exactly what i told them, their faces were a picture .If they had asked politely and in a calm manner then i would have considered moving if there was another space but shouting and bawling at me gets people nowhere

Re: Pensioner shunted car banned and fined.

in portsmouth, the council have designated disabled bays for the disabled permit holder and you can be clamped or ticketed. they did a check a couple of years ago and removed all the old ones and if you wanted a bay you had to apply. if successful you get a metal plate stuck on your wall and the bay painted on the road. other disabled drivers can park in it though.

Similar are available here and probably elsewhere ,but the bays in this street are only advisory .According to the parking control officer they are only there to aid the disabled in parking somewhere in the street ,if they are vacant then anyone can park in them

Re: Pensioner shunted car banned and fined.

It's the school run jockeys that are the biggest menace. In many cases the kids who need to cross the road to get home or get to the bus stop are placed in danger because of the whoppers who have parked their cars nose to tail near the school entrance. Not every school has a lollipop man/lady.

If mummy and daddy can afford a second car to run little Johnny to school then surely they can afford to buy little Johnny a bus pas or perhaps extol the benefits of a little physical exercise.

As well as all this, our nearby hospital has introduced a series of parking restrictions for staff, which has resulted in the roads opposite and next to local schools being overrun with parked cars. The chaos with buses, lorries and cars trying to pass through as well as school traffic is unbelievable. And work crews have just started installing improved street lights here too.

Re: Pensioner shunted car banned and fined.

We used to have our drive way blocked every morning and afternoon for the school runs, you know i'll only be a couple of minutes etc.
Anyways the best thin we did was buy a second car (both with towbars) so we park one car about 2 mill from the front of the offending car tow bat facing it and (you've guessed it!) the second car about 2 mill from the back, tow bar facing the car.
Then when they come back we just say we'll only be a minute or two lol.
you know they seam to know us now and no one parks over our drive, loads of fun.
