Speed up and down like a yo yo all of a sudden on Astraweb.
Hello
Since last week my D/L speeds hvae been all over the place downloading through Astraweb, I download a lot of college study information and on my 10mb broadband when I dopwnload after 9.00pm I was always getting a constant 9.2mb download speed, now it's between 9mb dropping to 6.5mb and back up again on every download, what could this be ???
Thanks

Re: Speed up and down like a yo yo all of a sudden on Astraweb.
I've noticed a bit of a slowdown in the mornings in that I've had to use 8 connections to get a solid 8Mb which I have my newsbin throttled to instead of the usual 6 connections on the EU SSL servers (24hr old posts so nothing to do with the older slower archive servers)
But that's about all I've noticed

Re: Speed up and down like a yo yo all of a sudden on Astraweb.
Currently on port 563, my connection varies from 42kb to 9.2mb, on port 443 the connection tops at 19.2mb on a 50mb connection. During the day though, no issues whatsoever, only happens after 6pm.
Not looking good!

Re: Speed up and down like a yo yo all of a sudden on Astraweb.
Download speed on my connection has been all over the place of late. Up until a couple of years ago download was rock solid at or near 10Mb/s but service has continued to deteriorate since then.
Currently looking at BT Infinity since my area has been enabled, they are estimating I should get 37.7Mb download 8.6Mb upload on Option 2, and should get 37.7Mb download 2Mb upload on Option 1 that costs little more than I pay VM now for an average well under the stated 10Mb!!!

I've noticed some varying speeds too, used to be solid! Currently getting timeouts/drop outs as we speak, hopefully just a blip

Re: Speed up and down like a yo yo all of a sudden on Astraweb.
4. What is BT's Traffic Management Policy?
BT continuously monitors network performance and reduces the speed available to very heavy users (typically less than 1 per cent of all customers) during a given month to ensure that the service received by other customers is not impacted through extremely heavy usage by a minority of people.
Customers who are classified as very heavy users will experience significantly reduced speed at peak times (typically 5pm-midnight every day but these times may change depending on the demand on the network) for a period of 30 days, or for as long as very heavy use continues. This applies to customers on all Options.
BT Total Broadband Option 3 and BT Infinity Option 2 allow unlimited downloads and uploads within the monthly rental price, so customers on these products will not be charged for over-use. However, this does not preclude BT from reducing your speed if you are a heavy user in order to protect the experience for the rest of our customers.
We may need to vary the policy from time to time to ensure the best possible experience for all our customers. This site will always be kept up to date with the latest information.
Not much different from VM.

At least on paper BT are targeting customers based on heavy usage, but like you say, VM are saying the same thing.
The reality is that, at present VM are targeting anyone that wants to download anything at all from p2p/usenet, even it is just a couple of mp3s, or one episode of something.

Oh Dear, Im not liking whats happening here, apart from that I have another problem and got my 8th Tech of the year coming out on Saturday as my upstream level has dropped to 29db, thinking of kitting out my spare bedroom for them as they spend that much time at my house :-)

Not quite, BT shape everyone's applications and on top those who use what they consider to be an excessive amount have a further all-protocols restriction put on them at peak times.

Isn't this what the traffic shaping was/is supposed to do ?
