French to bankroll music-buying

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11549874

Quote:
French people aged 12-25 are to be encouraged to buy music via a state-subsidised scheme.
The plan attempts to get young people into the habit of buying music rather than stealing it by file-sharing.
The scheme will revolve around pre-paid cards that have a face value of 50 euros (£43) but which will only cost 25 euros when bought.
The French government will pay the other half of the cost when a card is used to buy music on a download site.
One wonders how they can afford schemes like this during a recession?Or don't they have a recession?

Anyway does anyone think this will work?

Re: French to bankroll music-buying

It will be popular...with the legal downloaders..they might even buy more music

Someone will then claim it works..everyone is cured..it stops..and people go on strike for stopping it

During all that, the illegal downloaders continue

Vive la france

Re: French to bankroll music-buying

Why should the French taxpayer subsidise the music industry? Has some French Minister been plied with Champagne on a Luxury Yacht?

It has come to this because the music industry (Labels) produce too much rubbish and charge too much for it. The recording industry is going the same way as the Great British Pub for much the same reasons.

The only way to combat piracy is to make it not worth while by charging a realistic price for CD's and Albums.

Everybody would sooner own a quality CD than a carpy mp3 providing the price was right IMO.

I read somewhere an Industry Exec suggested a price of £1.00 each for albums (sorry no linky) to stimulate sales over piracy. Seems the way to go IMO.

Re: French to bankroll music-buying

Given the sentiments of the Toubon Law I wonder if one restriction will be that a proportion of the music so downloaded must be in French.

Re: French to bankroll music-buying

It's a good idea but should be done by the music industry not any government as it's the music industry that will gain .It should be upto the music/film industry to protect their own rights on film and music not any government

Why are mp3 sales rising and CD sales dropping then?

Oh yeah its because I can have thousands of mp3 on my iPhone.. I can shazam a track I hear and purchase it on the spot.. The CD is dead..

From the link you supplied - "However, the law mandates the use of the French language in all broadcast audiovisual programs, with exceptions for musical works and 'original version' films".

I beg to differ. I still buy CDs. Partly because I like having the physical product and Artwork, and partly because the sound quality is better than MP3. Obviously, owning the CD does not stop you from ripping it to a digital format and sticking that on your phone. Plus: you can do that as many times as you want should other/better formats become available.

For all the convenience of the MP3, I fail to see why you would purchase an inferior format when you can get better quality that you can rip to whatever poor quality you want?

Please before we get sidetracked into the merits of differing formats can I remind you to stick to the topic?

I wonder if you will feel the same way about the law if you get burgled or mugged?

Why not open you own thread about whatever is getting up your nose, Mr I should be able to have whatever I like without paying for it and anything I create I'll give away for free because I believe in nobody paying for anything especially as I'm completely talentless myself so why shouldn't I steal other people's intellectual property.
