Re: just got 50 meg installed & done a speed test
Probably cached in your browser.
click on these 2 gamefiles battlefield_2142_demo.exe and bfme2demo_english_final.exe and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running add them together then multiply them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.
Remember to stop and delete the files.
i.e : 250Kbps X 8 = 2Mbps, 500Kbps X 8 = 4Mbps, 1250Kbps X 8 = 10Mbps, 2500Kbps X 8 = 20Mbps
Then add 10% to the final figure to account for any processes running on your computer.

If it was cached on his PC he would get the same download speeds for each test and I can assure you that the read speed off a hard drive compared to the read speed off a broadband connection is way, way more than 1.5 to 3 times quicker.

Yes quite right about that.
I rather doubt its anywhere near those speeds though unless he is in Ashford but then the upload would be higher.

Re: just got 50 meg installed & done a speed test
Those erroneous speed results are generally the result of caching by 'web guard' antivirus products rather than the browser. They collect the received data into 'pools' which are examined then released to the system. It happens so fast you'd never know about it... until you try to run a speed test and the results are far faster than you'd expect!
Basically your AV simply collected the incoming data (from the test) and analysed it before releasing a couple of seconds' worth of downloaded information to you at once; thus making it appear to be ~100Mbps. Temporarily disabling your AV during a speed test will eliminate this issue. Just remember to turn it back on!

Re: just got 50 meg installed & done a speed test
Also of note is how Speedtest.net and other Ookla based testers work. They split the download test up into 30 chunks and whichever chunk has the most data shifted is the one that gets reported, IE they report peak speed not average speed which can also cause some anomalous results with cable especially.
