ntl:250 modem -> dir301 router problems
Hi,
I have run into difficulties while trying to set up a wireless network for some friends; any help would be much appreciated. They have a e08c007 (=ntl:250, I think) from with Virgin Broadband; connecting either of two laptops straight to this with a cable works fine. They also have a D-Link dir-301 router, which both laptops can see fine. But when the modem is connected to the router, the router doesn't pick up the internet. Powering either modem or router off and on doesn't seem to help. Would any one have any suggestions?
Thank you in advance;
Mohan

Re: ntl:250 modem -> dir301 router problems
Hi,
I take it you have turned on the modem first, waited a minute, and then the router.
Have you been into the router's setup 192.168.0.1 to check all is configured properly?

Re: ntl:250 modem -> dir301 router problems
Thank you for the quick reply!
Waiting: we waited a bit, but probably not long enough. I will try a whole minute next time I visit them.
I looked in the router properties, but wasn't sure what settings to pick. Is DHCP correct? Should I set Primary/Secondary DNS IPs?
Thanks again,
Mohan

You wan`t dynamic IP(DHCP) you wan`t DNS Relay checked, Primary DNS 194.168.4.100, Secondary 194.168.8.100
Maybe also try going to Status/Device Info->DHCP Renew
Also have a look in tools/system check to see what the WAN Link status is.

I dropped in on them again today and tried this, and it didn't do the trick. (Thank you for the suggestion, though.)
I recall that the first time we tried DHCP with Primary DNS 194.168.4.100, Secondary 194.168.8.100. (Those were guesses, taken from ipconfig -- we didn't really know what we were doing.) I'm not sure we had DNS Relay checked; I'll try it next time, together with your other suggestions.

Under Status/Device Info, it says "DHCP Client Disconnected".
And when I try Renew, it says "Renew IP timeout"

Re: ntl:250 modem -> dir301 router problems
You need to disconnect both router and modem, and leave them both powered down for 5-10 minutes. Then turn the modem on on its own, with nothing connected to it, and leave it for 5-10 minutes. Then connect the router, and switch it on - after that everything should work just fine.
