ati 4890 1 gig cards
I've had one of these cards for a month n a bit now.
And every game i play, tf2,batman aa,and others.
I play at 1680x1050 resolution.
And I've been trying fraps recently and never ever get 60fps in game.
Here is my computer.
e7300 coreduo @3.20ghz(not sure if i have this set up properly tbh?).
4 gigs of memory
p5ql pro motherboard.
And this 4890 1 gig gfx card.
These cards are virtually top of the range from ati.
So why when i am playing games at only 1680x1050 resolution mostly max with low shadows.
Why do i never seem to get good frames per second?
Surly this card should max all games out minus the obvious crysis which i haven't bothered trying.
Does my head in.

Re: ati 4890 1 gig cards
what you really should be worried about is how low the framerate drops.
What AA and AF are you using? I have a 4870 512 meg and game at high levels and smoothly so THB I do not give a toss what framerate I get. I would if it effected the game but it doesnt so I dont care

Re: ati 4890 1 gig cards
Like i am trying need for speed now the new one nfs shift.
Turned res to 1680x1050, all high minus shadows on low.
Turned fraps on and get an average fps of 39.
That's low.
To think gaming now plays at higher level resolutions with these cards.
Why the low fps?
Is a bit jerky at times too.
Latest ati 9.9 drivers aswell.
Are they blagging us by selling us these cards or what?

No, if you said this in a real islamic state.
You would be punished for 'taking the **** outta the koran'.
And sentanced to 100 lashings and 4 years imprisonment.
Soon to come to the U.K.

Ginge, try recording Fraps to another disk, or, try a different recording program?

Re: ati 4890 1 gig cards
Other things such as GameCam can record. I'm sure there are more.

Re: ati 4890 1 gig cards
im just installing need for speed shift now so will let you know what frame rate i get in about 30 mins or so, and i will use fraps.
---------- Post added at 19:55 ---------- Previous post was at 18:51 ----------
1st of all the worst driving game i have ever played next to need for speed pro street, they have ruined the series imo but other's may like the simulation style racing games.
2nd of all they have limited the game to 60fps, sorry but it is yet another console port max detail with max aa and af at my max res at the moment of 1366x768 i get 60fps solid with what appears to be no way of increasing the max fps.
so don't worry your card is not faulty or anything like that as zingle says all pc games at the moment are console ports, and i expect that to be the same even when crysis 2 comes out as that rumour has it will be playable on a console.
if you was to play crysis i would expect about 25-40fps roughly maybe abit higher from your setup.
this game is about to be uninstalled!!!

Fraps can be used to simply display the FPS you don't have to use it's recording options, I assume this is what the OP was using it for...
Sometimes putting v-sync on will limit FPS to try and reduce tearing effects, also some games have an FPS limiter.
Some of the shadows/AA effects probably need a very powerful card or perhaps even multiple powerful cards to run well, it's getting a bit silly really.

Re: ati 4890 1 gig cards
Sounds like your cpu is bottlenecking the card i had a similar problem with my old 4800 amd dual core, putting a triple/quad core in will unlock a lot more of the card especially nowadays when 8/10 pc games are console ports and the 360 uses a triple core cpu inside.
Games run much better with more than 2 cores now and unless its a pc only title you'll probably not see much optimisation with new games, anything above 30+fps is still really playable.

Re: ati 4890 1 gig cards
Im Using Nvidia's GTX 295, Supposedly the best Card In the world right now. Most expensive But got mine with the comp
Erm Like many have said Already Most games at the minute are Limited to 60-100Fps
I'm on an 8gbDDR3 Machine With a Phenom II X4 proccessor and Get about 58fps on console ports So i wouldnt worry to be honest
Most ive got after 4 weeks of using this pc is around about 140fps
Anyone know any games where i could really hit highs ?
Btw i got 40fps on crysis .... Sucks huh
