Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
Hi guys,
Ive only had a quick look through this section and theres not been any news on front page, just incase anyone doesnt know,
Were upgrading broadband size L customers from 4mb broadband to 10mb broadband at no extra cost.
Upload speeds are going from 386kbps to 512kbps.
This will be a rollout phase approach and should be complete end of summer, beginning end of february. Also plans to launch 50mb later in the year for existing 20mb (XL Customers).
See more @ www.virginmedia.com/evenfaster

EDIT : lol already been posted :S neverminddddd x

Not sure yet mate, its the 50mb id personally be interested in :P
But on this case, i know as much as you.
In relation to rollout, as per list for 20mb i dont think it was totaly accurate either, im on the uddingston ubr and it was said that it wouldnt be done until half way through rollout, even though it was done as of 1st of may last year, so even when the schedule is released it may not be fully accurate.
best way to check is on 1st march or whenever end of feb check your modem config

What area was first to go from 10 to 20? Isn't Manchester usually first for these upgrade things?

Dunno about that but Northants is usually last.
However in the case of the 20meg fiasco being last was a good thing.

I wouldnt take any date as confirmation mate, dont get your hopes up, not until theres an official release, which will be public.
As for over subscription, well any areas which are over subscribed will be looked at first with regards to network hardware upgrades, id think.
Having a look at some comms on our network division, theres been great progress made with network and ubr upgrades, if theyre introducing 10 and 50meg as mainstream this year i reckon theyre going to need as much upgrading as they can get !!!

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
LOL these speed upgrades do make my chuckle. My "20mb" service, in common with many other peoples it seems, is currently running at less than 0.25mb. How dare they promise these huge speeds when they so obviously cannot deliver them?

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
As Above, Can I ask what the point of Virgin Upgrading from 4mbit to 10mbit and handing out 50mbit when the second you start to actually use the network, it crippled to a Quarter of the speed (from 4mbit to 1mbit or less). Personally to me its just a marketing ploy, a numbers game if you like - the reality is somewhat different though..

See the thread title which includes the word 'summer', for which read any time after September - no-one should assume they will get this 'upgrade' before it is ready to happen - the people on the phone lines probably know less than we do.
That isn't meant to sound cynical, but previous experience has shown that these staggered roll outs of upgraded connections have their own momentum - phoning VM is unlikely to get a definitive response, imo, & avoids the 'VM lied they said I'd be upgraded by 19th Feb' type posts....
I'll be the first to eat humble pie if manchester does turn out to suddenly capable of the increased speed, but I have to say that if I was a call centre bod bombarded with 'when will I get it' calls, I would be tempted to tell the customer what they want to hear, whether I actually knew, or not

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
There has been alot of behind the scenes work including re-segmentation and UBR upgrades to handle the speed upgrade.
As for who gets what when, the evenfaster webpage will probably have it on before Customer Care has any info lol

I don't know where this has come from. The press release said:
Quote:
|
Virgin Media currently offers its customers a top speed of 20Mb, and the new 50Mb service will be made available to over 9 million homes in the UK by the end of 2008.
|
The 50Mb product is 99.99% likely to be a new highest tier product, NOT an upgrade to the 20Mb service

As above, this is a very good point and thanks for pointing it out!
I personally didnt think of it like that, and just 'assumed' it would be a 2,10,50 service. But there definately is a chance it could be classed as a new broadband tier, would make sense, i could imagine a brand new 'XXL' package haha :P
They basically release most things at the same time internally and externally, the even faster page was put up as reference to internal communications.
But as for calling up to find out when it will be put on, theres simply not much point. Rollout as far as i know will commence end of february and finish end of summer.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
OMG this will cause murder now, with the last roll out (should that be trickle out) everyone was crying "why them and not me" for weeks and months then there was all the trouble with few not getting the 'up to' speed promised. Here we go again.
I am on a set top box and i think i can only expect 6-8mb anyway, apart from a few dodgy days with high gaming pings no problems. perhaps this will be the start of my troubles.
As for it being a FREE upgrade well i suppose it is but other places are offering 8mb much cheaper than my £25 4mb connection. hey ho here we go.
