50meg installed today. issues already!

hi, just had the engineer round to install 50meg bb for me. tests he did were fine. one without router and one with. speed was higher without but nothing to be concerned with. (it was showing about 48 without 40 with.)

he left so i downloaded a large 12gig file from giganews. worked fine did it in half an hour at speeds averaging 5.8MB/s.

this was pretty much a test file so i deleted and went back about 20 minutes later to actually download something i wanted. again speeds were about 5.8-5.9MB/s for a bit.

then out of nowhere the speed just dropped and started spiking badly went down to 500k - 900k. i know people have had problems with 50 meg but i didn't expect it to be within an hour of having installed!

rebooted pc and started again. speed rose gradually to 3MB/s then dropped almost immediately back down to those lowe levels. i know there's 'apparently' no STM on 50meg at moment.

i'm at work now but is there anything it could be? and what should i try to rectify?

(speedtest.net gave me 5Mb/s, note the small 'b')

I got the same, service was upgraded from 20mb to 50mb last Thursday, mine is the same as yours...except mine keeps losing it's external connection.

The engineers are baffled, 6 days without internet is not good for my mood

Re: 50meg installed today. issues already!

rockshow I have exactly the same problem using giganews and astraweb... 8 weeks later... 15 phone calls... 10 techs, including principle and his manager their network.. problem still exists.

They have done a repull, new modem put me on a new tab on the cab (infact about 3 diff ones). Everything new even the cable to the modem itself.

They come out set up do speed tests they get 50mb so they can't find the problem.
They have even does a full week of daily tests which as you can imagine will last 5 mins each test. Found nothing.
But then again all my test on my PC work with 50mb until I pull any considerable amount of BW through for longer than 10-15 mins, then BUMP down to 500-1.2mb.

They have blamed the Modem dropping power. SNR which the levels was to low that they finally put up. They have blamed also faulty connectors.
Last time I spoke to 2nd line which was some weeks ago they found MAJOR packet loss. But that was before the repull (which made no difference).

To be honest, I just feel like a Beta tester :|

Good luck mate... your going to need it

EDIT:
Oh did I mention that allot of the engineers they sent had no clue about 50mb? They'd had little to no training. Brought a booklet that seemed to confuse them.
It got to the point I was telling the Phone support not to send anyone who was not 50mb trained as they would NOT get through the door.

haha... exactly the same as I've had. I'm in the south Yorkshire area.
But they tell me they've sorted all the 50mb issues other than mine,, 8 weeks on.. :|

At the moment I'm waiting for a call from 2nd line. Hopefully IBM can spot it.

Re: 50meg installed today. issues already!

thanks for the replies. unfortunately not what i was hoping to hear!

disappointing as apart from the STM the 20meg i had always went at full speed.

have these been tried without the router attached? is this likely to help me?

and is everyone getting speed fluctuations with 50meg or are there some out there who get max speeds 24/7?

don't want to be jumping the gun too much but am i right in thinking i am still in my cooling off period for 28 days??

if this is the case is it cancelled completely or can i go back to my 20meg??

Re: 50meg installed today. issues already!

I'm 99% close to reverting to 20mb, I might need to swear at someone - the engineer said he can't come back till friday, and I've got no slot - It's just a "maybe"....so that'll be 1.5 weeks without internet, I'm pretty fecked considering part of my job depends on having an active internet connection 24x7.

On a side note, I removed my d-link router from the equation and my download speed (from news demon & thundernews) climbed back up to just over 6,000kbps as opposed to 3,500 and 4,800, I've got an open ticket with d-link about the routers inability to handle those speeds.

If I thought it was a quick fix, I'd degrade to 20mb straight away - but I know it will take an engineer to come round, remove my old CM and replace it with a crappy one again....

gungygussit - the 3600 - 4800 speeds you were getting is that with a wireless connection or using a wired connection with the router attached?

Re: 50meg installed today. issues already!

That was wired connection via my router, on a gigabit ethernet - I always ask myself, why have a gigabit network with a 50mb connection and download via wireless? (lol)

Re: 50meg installed today. issues already!

and removing that router fixed your problem?? if so i might try that first.

unfortunately looking at other threads on this forum it doesn't look like its going to be that simple. a frustrating night / few weeks ahead.

haing just paid £80 for activation / service fee i'd be a little reluctant to go back to 20meg but if it isn't sorted quickly i'll prob do that.

anyone know what sort of charges i'll be letting myself in for?

Re: 50meg installed today. issues already!

I got upgraded last week, my speeds seem to be all over the place too. When the engineer tested it he said i was getting 44mb going through the router. Fastest test i have got off speedtest.net is 33.90?

Also when i am using newsbin it is up and down like a whores panties.

Is speedtest reliable or am i in the same boat as everyone else. They said i could go back to 20mb after a month and keep the now modem, is that true lol.

Re: 50meg installed today. issues already!

having spent a large amount of time this afternoon browsing the various forums it appears there are a lot of people with this issue.

i haven't seen many cases (any?) where someone has had the problem and managed to fix it by contacting VM. appears to be a couple of people on here who have full service from the start.

not sure VM are even aware of an issue in which case it would seem a waste of time awaiting a fix.

i'll have a play tonight on mine see if i can get anything consistent. if not i'll downgrade back to 20meg. i think i can do that!

just a shame i may have wasted £80 on the activation and service fee which i doubt i'll get back.

Re: 50meg installed today. issues already!

Out of interest...

In http://192.168.100.1

Your Downstream page what are your 3 Power Level
(dBmV) and your 3 RxMER (dB) set as?

On your upsteam page.. what is Power Level (dBmV) set as?

When you get CAPPED... leave the download going and try pinging your gateway (link the modem direct to the back of the PC, CMD, ipconfig /all then look for Gateway).
ping ipofgateway -n 100
or
ping ipofgateway -n 1000
Each time I bet you get shed loads of timeouts.

Copy and paste these into a TXT file then request a call back from 2nd line.

I'd also advise doing those pings and copying them into a .TXT at the time your 50mb is at full speed. Keep the download on and ping your gateway the same way as above.
So they can be compared to. Explain to them exactly what you did. Pinging the gateway will be the first step so they can discover if its more of a local issue.

Re: 50meg installed today. issues already!

thanks for this. i shall try them when i get home. unfortunately this won't be until half 9 onwards but i prob will have a play tonight.

to clarify -

after ipconfig /all i need to take note the figure under gateway?

then i enter the 2 commands of

ping ipofgateway -n 100
ping ipofgateway -n 1000

and take note of the figures printed there as well?

Go to RUN type CMD then press enter
Now type... Ipconfig /all
Now find the part that says Default Gateway (it will be an IP number)
Write it down.
Now type CLS and press enter.
Type ping ipofgateway -n 100

And wait till its done. You are better doing this at the time your speed drops while downloading. Then repeat the exact same step when your speeds are fine at 50mb.

To copy your results in Command Prompt by clicking the small icon top left then go to Edit --> Select all. Then do the same again but select Copy.
Just paste it to notepad.

The other instance of
ping ipofgateway -n 1000
Is for a longer test. Which is an option to replace 100. Choose one of the two tests you want to do. The 1000 will take longer to complete so be patient but it will be more of an extensive test for the 2nd line to look at.
