STM warning application?

2 questions:

1. How long has this %^&Â£$ (insert appropriate derogatory swear word) being going on?

2. Has anyone found an application that will work under XP and warn you when you've used 50% or 80% of your allotted downstream/upstream total between specified times?
All I can find are links to local council sites...

I use the 1st one. does not warn you when you are approaching any limit but does give you your total doen/upload.

Theres is a option on one that would alarm you when you have used a certain amount

Both of those are *30 day trial* programs, as is NetMeter.

The majority of customers will be totally unaware of STM as they just browse or use sites like MSN or Facebook.

I use this one from think broadband, it gives you all the info like hourly, daily, weekly and monthly totals, and best of all its free.

TBBmeter does exactly what I want and even has VM STM parameters already as an option. But it doesn't tell you how to set those options, is non-intuitive, has no help file and the forum is a mess.

I'm having the exact same problem as this guy and have managed to get only the evening alarm working through near-random clicking.

As far as not recognising STM, it's far from obvious why something is going at ~50kps. It could be either the remote computer or network traffic and it never bothered me enough to complain about it.

I had thought about writing a shell script to do something similar, for me this would involve 3 steps:

1. learn to write shell scripts.
2. Write script.
3. Enjoy!

Still stuck on step 1.

Anyway the basic job is fairly simple, some pseudo code.

Code:

Run at 4 pm (for evening stm)
10 start_total_data = snmpget -v 2c -c public 192.168.100.1 IF-MIB::ifOutOctets.1
20 Wait a bit
25 if time> 9pm then stop
30 Data_Since_STM_Start =(snmpget -v 2c -c public 192.168.100.1 IF-MIB::ifInOctets.1) - start_total_data
40 if Data_Since_STM_Start>(some amount dependant on package and when you want warned) then Do_something_to_alert_user else goto 20

Unless of course SNMP is disabled on you modem, though you could run it on your router if it supports it.
