Awful On Off Connection

All day my connection has been flaking out - pages wont load, no Xbox Live, no Twitter!

Had 2 very unproductive calls with Tech Support who after telling me that the Cable modem was fine, decided that it was at fault and is sending me a new one.

Does this onfo from my modem look ok to you guys?

Re: Awful On Off Connection

I could be wrong, but the upstream power level looks a little high.

What kind of modem do you have?

The power levels are quite normal for a EX-NTL connection and the Upstream is fine.

Re: Awful On Off Connection

I'd be a little worried about the downstream power level, also is that Downstream Frequency correct?

Both are fine. Chap is on the 4th ex-ntl overlay network downstream channel, power levels are ok for 64QAM EuroDOCSIS and upstream is all good.

Re: Awful On Off Connection

Thanks for the responses guys, does it seem like the new modem will fix the issue? Or should I push for an engineer?

I'm now just using my iPhone. Which isn't ideal!

Power levels are fine for an EX-Telewest 10Mb connection.

Re: Awful On Off Connection

Well, an engineer came out this morning- switched my modem 3 times, replaced the cable to the modem, added an attenuator and came to the conclusion that something "wasn't right" and that it should be working...

He called someone up and was told that due to the 50mb upgrades in the area were making connections go tits up, then the modem sprang back to life.

Happy that it had "fixed itself" he left. The connection was fine for about 10 minutes and its been spotty ever since!

What a joke!

Thank you

Have had one pc connected directly to modem since yesterday with no problem. Just beginning to wonder if it's a flaky modem (netgear wgr614) and/or cable?

Going to leave this pc connected for another couple of days abd then replace with other pc to see what happens.

Thanks you once again.

All power levels are fine for an EX-NTL connection and could well be an issue with the router.

You can get replacement ethernet cables from ASDA for £2.98 and most Pound shops for a £1 and even from Screwfix cheaply as well.

Thank you. May I ask you a couple of further questions pls.

I'm guessing that the upstream transit Power Level and downstream SNR indicate signal strength. Below what levels would I expect a ' weak ' connection/signal?

If when I lose connection the sync & ready lights remain permanently on does this actually imply I have a good signal or could it even be a weak one. Would this imply a fault my side of the modem?

Though my wife's pc is connected directly to the modem at the moment, internet connection apparently kept dropping out this afternoon with sync & Rdy lights on. During this period I happened to be trying to telephone home but kept getting ring tone no reply. I'm beginning to wonder if an intermittent cable fault exists between the cab and my house, primarily alongside a car hard standing. When the cable was laid in the good old days of NTL and contractors no ducting was used and the cable just runs beneath a couple f inches of concrete. Would this seem a possibility to your goodself and hence my questions re weak signal losing connection but still enabling sync & ready lights on the modem.

Your advice is much appreciated and grateful for your thoughts.

Thank you

PS.
