Could someone please look over my recent modem logs?

Don't know where else to ask about this and hopefully someone can help me out.

Been getting annoying download speeds, going up and down all the time and wondering if my modem was at fault, do these logs look to be where the fault is?

Those logs mean nothing, your upstream & downstream power levels would be more useful.

I see this said all the time "the mean nothing"

Could someone who knows what they are talking about explain why they mean nothing please?

thanks.

Be careful of reading modem logs, because what happens when you reboot your modem is that every single update for that modem is received at the same time giving you those worrying logs.

It also looks like your modem is a Motorola and if you look in my logs you will find some with the Date stamp of 1970 and we did not have broadband then.

All quite normal so do not worry about them.

What I want you to post is the Downstream power levels including the SNR and the Upstream power levels for me thanks.

In order:

Something in the DHCP response from Virgin is not recognised as valid by this modem.

A command has been sent to the modem from Virgin which it is unable to comply with, it doesn't recognise the SNMP OID being changed.

Modem requested date and time from Virgin, no response received.

2009-04-25 13:18:19 6-Notice 0x041D0318 SW Download INIT - Via Config file class-cm-bas.cm
Modem attempting to download the firmware update specified in the configuration file it received from Virgin, class-cm-bas.cm via the firmware update server address contained within the .cm file.

Quote:
2009-04-25 13:18:19 4-Error 0x041D0444 SW upgrade Failed before download - File not Present
The firmware update is not present on the update server specified.

Why these mean nothing:

DHCP warning, as indicated is for a non-critical field.

Unrecognised OID - this SNMP reprogramming isn't critical to function. Virgin use a couple of different OIDs to ensure that they catch all their modems.

ToD request - while Virgin should supply this it's not essential to the function of the modem.

SW Download INIT - Modem is attempting to download a firmware update, this is informational.

SW upgrade Failed - Upgrade didn't work, but modem is still online. Upgrade not required to function.

We both agree not critical to the modem operation.

What would you expect to see in the logs if the was an issue.

If it were congestion sadly nothing.

If it were a signal issue possibly losses of downstream synchronisation and missed ranging responses, after the 'No Response received' bit should be T3 timeout but that gets cut off. That indicated that the CMTS didn't hear my modem giving its' periodic 'keepalive'.

Could be simple congestion if it's download speeds twitching. I get it all the time and most of the time my modem's logs are pretty quiet.

I'll show you some logs from my modem where I've had signal 'twitches' this week - there has been network sweep and clean going on in this area to prep for the overlay.

Have to love how losing downstream lock is classed as 'Information'. Silly Ambit

Thanks just asking for general clarification due to the amount of posts with modem logs in them.
