Re: French driving on the wrong side of the Atlantic??

Typical, even the navy are bringing in cheap skippers.

" Polish captain Franciszek Ksawery,is believed to have previously been in charge of a small canoe in a Polish park.He fooled the Royal Navy by wearing a big hat,and was given the position of captain at £3 an hour.He claims he was confused by all the buttons and levers. The navy declined to comment"

Re: French driving on the wrong side of the Atlantic??

I like that.

The French nuclear subs have names also traditionally associated with Royal Navy ships: Triomphant (HMS Triumph is a nuclear submarine), Téméraire (HMS Temeraire is a naval establishment), Vigilant (HMS Vigilant is yet another one of our nuclear subs, damn-their-eyes) and Terrible (HMS Terrible was a WW2 aircraft carrier).

Perhaps if they picked some different names there might be less confusion. Mind you, they might just have been driving it in the traditional fashion of Parisian motorists. You can't hear urgent horn hooting underwater, unfortunately.

Maybe they were trying to get their own back after the RN destroyed their fleet in ww2,
an interesting read.

Re: French driving on the wrong side of the Atlantic??

The French originally reported they'd hit 'a container'. Mon Dieu. They can never resist having a go, can they?

I'm surprised it wasn't a 'container full of shopkeepers'. They knew what they ruddy hit.

lack of windows on a submarine perhaps?

on the face of it, it appears a dumb thing to happen, except both submarines are designed not be noticed and so actually worked

Re: French driving on the wrong side of the Atlantic??

I think that's basically it - they're designed not to be noticed...

Although by the sounds of it, we could save money on the next generation of subs by designing them like containers, since the French couldn't hear that coming either :P

Re: French driving on the wrong side of the Atlantic??

This is not as uncommon as you might think, its just that somebody has let this out and they`re not supposed to talk to the media about these incidents. I`ve been involved in one or two bumps over the years and its usually the case of one of them refusing to give way during a game. They would have known exactly where one another was.

Yes, but these are both SSBNs, they're not actually meant to be hunting *each other*, are they?

Boomers still have to play the game, no good in a simulator. They wouldnt have been alone, there would have been ssn`s from both countrys within 20 miles.
