Re: 720p or 1020i

how come? my tv recognises its 'exact scan' feature in 1080i but not in 720p mode (where i just choose 'widescreen')
so why 720p over 1080i is, i guess, my question! ;-) TIA

720p is prob your best bet but I would have gone with a 1080p TV which is full HD.

Also what are you using it for because if its xbox your using it for I am sure the games only support 720p.

Re: 720p or 1020i

its 1080i not 1020i !!!

anyway it depends on the tv. if the TV`s native resolution is 1080p (1920x1080) then you are better off using 1080i.

if your tv is a 1360x768 (non 1080p) then you are better off using 720p.

people usually say that a progressive (any resolution with a P at the end) is better than and interlaced image but its not always true. this is due to the fact that tv`s scale the image to their native resolution. the bast thing to do is to try the tv with both and see which one you prefer especially on the the BBC HD channel.

as a general rule 720p is better for fast paced programs such as sports (football, tennis, rugby ect) and 1080i is better for movies and non fast moving images.

Re: 720p or 1020i

I've been wanting to ask this question myself, so thanks.
I have an hd tv which the descriptions claims has a resolution of 1680x1050. I originally had it set on 720(p) only to one day try it at the 1080, which I didn't beleive my tv supported. Well, I was actually struck that the picture was better, and it seemed that programmes in 4:3 seemed to use more of the screen. However, since then I do get the feeling that programmes in HD do not look as sharp as they did in 720.
So my question is; Would I really see much of a difference between the two? Or was it just my imagination (my eyesight is fine btw.)
Also does having my V+ set to 1080 make any difference to the amount of screen a 4:3 will use?
Finally, if my tv doesn't support 1080 but I use the setting anyway, will this make programmes I watch in HD look poorer than if I watch them in 720?
I hope the fine (and very smart) people on here can give me their opinion, as I do switch between the two, but sometimes don't trust my own judgement.

Re: 720p or 1020i

Not tried mine on 1080i yet, after googling it seems p is a better way of transferring the pictures to screen so think i will stay with p.
I decided against 1080p for my new tv firstly as the equivalent made the tv 50% dearer
Secondly i only have a dvd player and V+ on it so no 1080p output.
Thirdly its 32" at about 10-15ft away so not sure 1080p would increase my hd experience that much.

What *you* see is all that matters

You're basically asking other people whether *you* prefer bananas or strawberries when:

What *you* see is all that matters

Psychology is a very strange thing

You make a good point, but I was wondering if any of the people who new what all the 720/1080 stuff meant, would think a t.v which is 1680x1050 should generally look better on either setting.
All in all I'm happy with the picture, so that is what's important.

Sadly they don't. Microsoft will nearly always put '1080p' on the back of game boxes because the Xbox will scale EVERYTHING to whatever resolution you have it set to regardless of the source resolution. There are actually only a tiny number of real 1080p games on the 360. There are a few more on the PS3 (many downloadable PSN games run in true 1080p), but you're not going to see big full on 3D games in 1080p until the next generation of consoles arrives.

QFT, in fact a lot of the games aren't even 720p i.e. Halo 3 which is 640p.
