Slow Remote Reactions

I have not really paid much attentuion to it before but have now noticed something that is really irritating me. When i press any buton on my v+ remote sometimes it takes ages to pop up on screen or dosent even happen. Then sometimes it keeps displaying i have pressed 6 when i have 1,2,3,4, or 5? I used my neighbours normal virgin remote and ther setup is instant. Is this normal for v+ or jus something thats an issue with my remote/box? Thanx.

Re: Slow Remote Reactions

It's normal (at times).

Someone will be along any second to say that it's an IR signal from your tv causing it and if only you can shield it your v+ will be transmogrified into a lighting quick piece of equipment.

Re: Slow Remote Reactions

I was joking. Many electrical devises give off infra red. The theory is when your tv is warming up it gives off more IR and these false signals confuse the v+. There's also the even more ridiculous ones about energy saving bulbs jamming your v+. Unfortunately on that one some people have the same behaviour happen in the daytime or when the bulbs have been switched off for hours.

I am sceptical about this having been with virgin for years. The software on digital tv has always been sluggish. It was sluggish and unstable on Pace boxes, it was quicker on the replacement ones. It's just that the v+ doesn't get on especially well with the current software. So in my opinion it's entirely normal. Like I said others will disagree and think that it's any other explanation.

Nothing ridiculous about it. See http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/34607772-post27.html

yazza: You need to report the fault to VM.

Re: Slow Remote Reactions

I had V+ installed on saturday, the remote responds immediately. It obviously doesn't effect every box. FWIW I have two energy saving bulbs in the room!

Re: Slow Remote Reactions

just spoke to them and they said it can take up to 5-6 seconds to respond from a single action, because it has a recording tuner in the box? i said i had used another box which was much quicker and the woman on the other end of the phone said "no, it wasnt" lol. really helpful

Re: Slow Remote Reactions

She's talking poop. Like I said, mine is instant. The only delay is the buffer between channel changes, 1 second max.

Re: Slow Remote Reactions

Give it time. Fill up the hard drive and use it for a while and it'll soon slow down.

It is ridiculous. Just people quoting "IR" without doing the tests is unrigorous and unscientific, I do actually know a fair bit about energy saving light bulbs. What's more it concedes in the article you quote how unlikely it is. I have a false signal go to my tv once every couple of weeks. It's also just VM blaming things to do with their products on other things. I like the v+ very much but the hardware/software has always been a problem on digital tv as I have already pointed out.

It's a great piece of equipment. The sluggishness at times is one of the few flaws, as is the lack of a HD EPG. I think people generally complain about the speed of the v+ (it is average to slow) a bit too much and don't focus on it's other features.

*sigh*

Try calling again, and this time don't mention the speed. Mention that when you press one button, the box does something else.

On the other hand, suggesting it as a possibility is helpful. No point in someone waiting for a tech to visit if it's something they can easily remedy themselves.

It is a rare fault. Personally I've never witnessed it with compact fluorescents, nor LCD or plasma TVs. (I have seen STBs affected by full-size fluorescents and sunlight). But with 4 million boxes, it still causes problems for a significant number of people.

Re: Slow Remote Reactions

Changing the batteries in the remote helped to cure the slow reaction AND the annoying habit of goint to a totally different chanel to the one keyed in, but the remote seems to have an enourmous apetite for batteries! I find myself having to change them every couple of weeks.
I'm on my 2nd remote, the first one packed in after I threw it against the wall in frustration last year!!!!!

Re: Slow Remote Reactions

My V+ box has always been slow, but since being forced to re-boot at the weekend it now takes around 8 seconds just to scroll up one channel in my favourites list. And some menus take so long - I've forgotten why I went there by the time it comes up! We are talking 20 - 30 seconds. Is this a general problem (maybe a software upgrade at the weekend) or are Virgin singling me out for special treatment?
