Server for backups?

At the moment I backup the data on web vm (it's hosted on esxi on my co-lo'd box) the data is repilcated on to the 2nd drive (software raid1) and a script also uploads the data to a backup host (100gb offsite space, uses raid5). Due to the size of the backups I do not upload the full VM image, just the data needed to restore the websites.

Problem is the backup host is in the US , the server is in the UK, the transfer speeds are Dire. (often below 4Mbit/s) while the data is on a raid5 on the backup host the slow speeds would mean a full restore of the hosted sites.

The only reason the backups are in the US is beucase I used to have a Dedicated server in the US, but when i moved to co-lo it became based in the UK. I kept the same backup house throughout.

I was looking at a Basic dedicated box in france , ovh will offer a machine with a 250gb harddrive in + an 500gb USB drive attached for ~£30/mo

So the Data in theory should end up replicated on both the disks in the machine itself but also on 2 disks france.

Also I sometimes take a local copy and store them in an encrypted disk.(but due to the size of the files this only tends to be once a month and only if i remember,)

The sites are just personal sites and for friends, and while I do tell them that I don't gurantee backups I just know most people will forget to take regular backups so I at least make the effort.

Re: Server for backups?

If you're asking would OVH be worth it, yes, I have a box there myself. If you have any questions, ask here, PM me or add my MSN and I'll be happy to answer.

I will say this, the USB disks are fairly fast. USB2.0 and I got a sustained 350Mbps (35MB/s ish) out of it while transferring data. I use it as a full time data drive now, and its passed a fair few TB through it since I got it.

I backup my OVH server to home but thats because its my production server with all my websites/e-mail on it.
