Doctor Who goes HD!

BBC HD viewers - on Sky Digital, Virgin Media and Freesat - will be happy to hear that Doctor Who is going high definition this year.

The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, out tomorrow, reveals that the show will be made and broadcast in HD during 2009, according to posters on the Doctor Who Forum website.

Four feature-length specials starring David Tennant will air in 2009 - one at Easter, the others on and around Christmas - before Matt Smith takes over as the Eleventh Doctor in 2010.

Moved to entertainment since it's not especially just about Virgin Media's BBC HD channel, but more the programme itself

I believe they had previously not done Dr Who in HD because of the problems and costs of the CGI stuff. In these days of BBC cutbacks, someone must have robbed the piggy banks for this flagship programme.

Oh I also heard that the cost of re-building the TARDIS was prohibitive too and the current set wouldn't stand up to HD.

Mind you there are points on the Torchwood set that don't stand up to HD.

Maybe they can afford too due to their being less episodes this year. Hopefully they will continue into next season.

I had always assumed that part of the reason for the hiatus this year was so they had the time and money to rebuild standing sets. The TARDIS doesn't feature in any of the specials this year, which makes sense if the rebuild is going on in the background during 2009.

I will say that Michelle Ryan will look good in HD. She can't act, but she does look good..

Good decision. This should ensure doctor who lives on for years as repeats for future generations.
