Xbox360 can't connect to Computer

So being the adventurous sort I thought I'd try to use the media player functions on the Xbox360 so I could watch stuff on my bigger telly.

PC is running Win XP SP3. I've turned the windows firewall off, and there is no other firewall installed.

Router is a Linksys WRT610N (I've also tried a Linksys WRT54GS to no avail). Connections are all wired. Since the PC can use internet and stuff, xbox can see xbox live, I know they are both getting correct network settings.

Whatever I do the Xbox is not seeing the PC and vice versa when browsing the network the PC cannot see the Xbox. Any ideas

Re: Xbox360 can't connect to Computer

You need to run MP on the xbox which will give you a code to "Pair" the Xbox and PC.

You install a Media extender on the PC. (www given by xbox)

---------- Post added at 15:07 ---------- Previous post was at 15:06 ----------

You cannot talk directly to the xbox via windows explorer / network.

I have seen a FTP method but I cannot get it working.

Re: Xbox360 can't connect to Computer

I've been to the xbox site www.xbox.com/pcsetup That hasn't prompted me to download anything other than media player 11 which I already have on the PC.

I'm then told I will need to add a code in media player when I click library > media sharing. But the xbox is already listed in there as active (deleting and reinstalling made no difference).

There I times when I really hate technology

Re: Xbox360 can't connect to Computer

the xbox website doesn't say anything about using it with WinXP - only Vista Home Premium. Unless it auto-detected my OS? I definitely have it working spot-on via Vista HP.

However I did find This >>> http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2209810,00.asp which MAY help

Re: Xbox360 can't connect to Computer

Very odd. I've fired up an old PC with Win xp SP3 that was sitting in a corner. That has the same network setup as the main PC. The xbox can see that immediately. So why can't it see my main one

I have turned of windows firewall on the main PC. I'm not aware of any other one running, unless something from 18 months or more ago hasn't uninstalled properly.

I've followed all the links in the various articles posted. Nothings working

Really bemused now.

Media Centre Extender software is for Media Centre Windows, not XP, and thus won't run. It shouldn't be necessary for Win XP SP3, with Media Player 11.

Following that ms link only talks of Win XP SP2. In any case following that ends up in a dead end with nothing to download

The extremetech site, is basically repeating that which I'm trying to do.

Something must be blocked on my main PC. But for the life of me I don't know what.

it appears people didnt read your post , if your running generic xp sp2/sp3 , you DONT mess with any of the extra Media Centre Windows stuff as you dont have it unless you buy the WMC OC that the PCsetup uses to talk to the extra apps installed in thatMedia centre , for generic xp you just need to be running the right xp sevices, but id forget using windows media player for streaming to the 360 anyway.

just go get and install Tversity
http://tversity.com/

its will play far more files and is far better to use, an keep updated with new content....

regarding your old and main PCs working and not, i forget the exact services but i bet you disabled at least one of the required ones.

"windows media network shareing service", "plug and play Device host" , and "ssdp discovery service" are the main ones to make the 360 see the multicast streams/files i think, but as i say just try Tversity.... you wil fine it far better than th other 3rd party apps.

to make tversity see and use any LAN shared dirs and files, simply install the Tversity app as usual, make a new account name and password with admin rights, then set the Tversity service to use that account.... works great if you run one single Tversity on the lan....

iv looked to use more than one and found this but not tryed it as yet....

http://forums.tversity.com/viewtopic...tart=15#p54187

http://forums.tversity.com/viewtopic...2457e2cddfae07

installing the latest ffdshow
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/

and MatroskaSplitter.exe
http://www.digital-digest.com/softwa...3&ssid=0&did=2

what GFX card do you have Rob?, if you have a AMD/ATI Xxxx or HDxxxx then you might find using its AVIVO app interesting as on a generic intel core2 you can trancode a 90 min mkv to a wmv 360 compatable file type for quick and dirty conversion in 20 mins or so...

its advertised as GPU assisted, but its not as yet, only running on the CPU, so is effected by that power OC,its stil the fastest "quick and dirty" easy transcoder though .....

if you prefer, you can also download and install ATI Tray Tools , there that dir you wil find an app "ATIXcoder.exe" the writer made to access the AVIVO DLL directly and get slighty better control over the directshow ATI control apps etc

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/V...ay-Tools.shtml

if you dont have the AMD/ATI cards then you can probably make the old 2005 hacked stand alone freeware AVIVO trancoder app work for you PC OC and its still slighty faster than the current 8.12 driverset anyway.

Re: Xbox360 can't connect to Computer

Thanks, but I don't think the answer is more software on the main PC, it's probably less.

Put simply the PC is not being seen by the xbox. The PC however sees the Xbox in media player - at least an xbox is listed in there.

Forget trying to connect the media player options in the xbox. Simply trying to detect the computer using the xbox options of settings > Network settings > Test PC Connections, draws a blank. Until the xbox can see the PC, any third party software, that extends the stuff that can be played, isn't going to make a difference.

hmm , URL please , what exactly does this FTP method DO ?, copy files to the 360 HD and you can play the transfered video files directy off there perhaps?

AFAIK both the 360 and PS3 use UPNP over multicast to pull or push the content , so im wondering where and what this FTPing method is ment for , and what OS and extra apps its using... etc.

YEP, thats EXACTLY what im saying, you have disabled a service, this exact thing happened to one of my PCs in the LAN also, i had disabled one of the services above that the 360 needs to find and parse the broadcast information to get its information from the PC MP.

i could see and set the 360 as "share my media to:" but the Xbox360 couldnt see that PC in the LAN , but the others appeared without problems.

it IS a service missing on your main PC.

but seriously just use Tversity, it worked fine even with the missing MS service mentioned above i seem to remember, thats why im telling you this, as it is tryed and tested by ME, i just cant remember the exact service it was, its been a while....

but its your choice OC, take my tryed and tested advice or not....been there done that, got the teeshirt many times over.

put simply, the XP WMP broadcasting service isnt running, so the data isnt being put on the wire, and so the 360 cant know the WMP11 is trying to give it the info it needs to pull the files and build the 360 GUI display, that you then select from and start the multicast push/pull across the LAN.

Popper, tversity did enable stuff to be played back. Thanks.

Would still be nice to understand what is actually missing to prevent the PC showing up without it. As far as I can see that SSID thing and Plug and Pluy Device stuff is all enabled.

Re: Xbox360 can't connect to Computer

Not sure what is wrong.

I have my 360 connected on my wireless network and it picks up all my divx/avi files from my PC/Mac and that allows me to watch them all on my console streamed across the network.
