Telewest STB to DVD recorder set up- Help!

Hi, i have newly aquired both Telewest STB, and a Samsung R122 DVD recorder. My TV is digital as well anyway. The STB, DVD Recorder and TV all have 2 Scart connectors.

I have tried various combinations of connection with Scart leads, but when i try and start the set up of the new DVD recorder, it performs a channel scan and says it cant find any!

Am i missing something fundemental? Which device should i be hooking up to what? Please can you help this rather technologically challenged lass??!!!

Ta!

Wiring is simple - make sure you have good quality scart leads with the full 21 pins (some don't have all the necessary wires).

STB #1 > TV #1
STB #2 > DVD in #1
DVD out #2 > TV #2

To see / record the STB output on the DVD simply tune it to the AV channel.

your DVD will not be able to autotune anything unless you daisy chain a standard coaxial aerial, with a terrestrial signal (or perhaps an analogue bypass from the cable). ie. rooftop aerial > DVD > TV

Unhappy Re: Telewest STB to DVD recorder set up- Help!

Hi Guys
I'm not new to all things electronic but I am new to these forums. I'm sure one of you techies out there will be able to give me an answer.
I had an upgrade to Telewest broadband a month or so back, I was up to that point receiving my B/B via the STB (pace 4000) The Telewest engineer told me that my STB needed changing and fitted a Scientific Atlanta 4200DVB. At that point I foolishly forgot to check my DVD recorder and VCR functionality, When switching on the DVD recorder (Phillips R70) It did not detect a signal from the STB. I suspected he had'nt reconnected everything correctly but when I checked it was all fine.
So in summary I have
Thompson 28'' TV with 2 x Scart
Scientific Atlanta 4200DVB 2 x Scart
Phillips R70 DVD Recorder 2 x Scart
Akura DVD player 1 x Scart
Technika AV Sender (so we can watch TV in kitchen - uses 1 Scart)
CCTV camera (back garden monitoring - connected to AV2 on VCR )
Now everything worked fine untill the STB was changed. I've kinda added bits on over the years and its was all fine....... I have a problem now in that whatever order I plug things in as soon as I hit the AV2 button on the DVD recorder to record cable the picture turns a horrible shade of green. I have even brought one of those smart scart switches but that hasnt made any difference either. I also noticed when shifting things around a spare RF ariel cable lying on the floor. I think part of my problem is that the pace STB had an RF throughput and the telewest engineer simply unplugged it and left it laying there because the the Scientific Atlanta box only has an RF output which transmits a fixed signal at round about channel 54. I asked telewest if they could give me a pace box and all they said was that if my Scientific Atlantic STB was faulty they would replace it, but not neccessarily with a Pace! They also pointed out that what I was doing with the AV sender was illegal and that if I wanted to watch ''their services'' in another room that I needed to rent another box off of them ! Ha, Bring on Sky !!
If anyone has any suggestions how to resolve this particular dilemma I'd be more than chuffed to listen. Thanks guys and a great forum !

Re: Telewest STB to DVD recorder set up- Help!

Personally I would go back to them and just argue that everything was fine until their engineer came and changed the box. Thye have not provided you with a like-for-like swap.
The stuff about the video sender being illegal is rubbish too.
Having a green picture does not sound like it's anything to do with the unplugged cable though. Have you checked that the outputs of the box are correclty set to composite/RGB, to suit your equipment?

Thumbs up Re: Telewest STB to DVD recorder set up- Help!

Hi Buffalo and thanks for your quick reply.
Yes the output is set correctly, I've discovered that the only reason the pace STB was swapped out was that the engineer thought it to be faulty and later discovered it had an attenuator plugged into the input because of my close proximity to the distribution cabinet ouside! Have spoken to telewest again and they told me to change this, to change that and they are saying they wont change this box unless its faulty, I've argued with them and they are sending a tech out on Saturday, but they have said this job could be chargable. . . . mmmmmm I'm getting pretty darn good at arguing with them, trouble is I very rarely win !
Thanks for the advice !!

Re: Telewest STB to DVD recorder set up- Help!

Just a quick update.
After yelling at telewest customer services long and hard they are giving me free installation of a TV Drive box and they are only charging £3 a month for the first year. Seems they've finally given their staff some training

Lets hope its as good as they say it is !

Hi....
I have problems with my DVD TV CABLE set up as well. I have connected everything using your instructions above but all I get when I switch to AV1 or AV2 are blue screens. Can anyone help me with this please?

Re: Telewest STB to DVD recorder set up- Help!

You won't get Sky channels appearing separately as the tuner for Sky is in your Sky box, you will have to connect it via Scart which makes recording stuff a bit challenging

Re: Telewest STB to DVD recorder set up- Help!

Hi
Thanks for the reply. I understand what you mean, but how do i get the channels to register in order to record - I know I sound a bit thick but i spent all day yesterday trying to get the bloody thing to work but to no avail and i bought it in order to record sky channels mostly. Sorry to be a pain but i really need an answer to this otherwise i'm going to explode!!!! Do I have to do something with the Sky box itself or something different with the DVD recorder

Appreciate the help

Rach

Re: Telewest STB to DVD recorder set up- Help!

You would have to use the Scart input on the DVD Recorder and set up timers and on the Sky box set it to change channels automatically when the program you want to record starts.

Re: Telewest STB to DVD recorder set up- Help!

There's no such thing as channels on the R122 DVD recorder, purely just a single input AV2 (AV1 is designated as the output)

So I'm puzzled when you say that the R122 is scanning for channels???

Do you not have the manual for it??

Re: Telewest STB to DVD recorder set up- Help!

Yes I do have a Manual and I have followed the set up instructions as per the letter but it will not find channels that are on SKY just BBC 1 + 2 & ITV 1 & Channel 4.

---------- Post added at 10:03 ---------- Previous post was at 10:02 ----------

And the recorder is a TECHNIK not a Samsung. Thanks

Re: Telewest STB to DVD recorder set up- Help!

LOL, just realised you hijacked an old thread hence the samsung comment.

The recorder you have I think has only an ANALOGUE tuner hence the BBC1, BBC2, ITV, C4 and there should be C5 though in the next few years even these will vanish...

To record Sky (from a skybox) or VM from a VM box you have to select the AV/scart input (should be in manual) and/or if available use the analogue passthrough (VM is phasing this out)

You can only record whichever channel you have your sky/VM box on at that time (though you can set the boxes to change channel on the timer automatically)
