Boot up PC then delay of about 1 hour until internet works

Hi

First posting here... another call for help.

It's Birmingham, 2MB service.

My mate asked me to look at his Windows XP computer with this problem:

1. Boot up PC
2 Start Internet Explorer with home page of say www.bbc.co.uk and it just gives a blank screen without any error message.
3. All lights on Scientific Atlanta Webstar EPC21000 cable modem are on/flashing.
4. After between 30 mins to 1 hour, IE returns home page.
5. Outlook also gives error messages if tried in this time.
6. Switch off cable modem and after 30 secs switch on.
7. Repeat of steps 1-5 gives same outcome.
8. Have sent an email to Virgin media to report the problem but no response yet.

Has anyone else experienced this?
Is it worth trying to re-install everything (to get the internet connection working - not the whole of XP...)? If so what would need to be done?

Thanks in anticipation for any help...

Regards

I do not know really. Have you cleaned all cookies and temp files? perhaps download ccleaner and run it. Spyware scans adaware and spybot? what av is running? what about a firewall? perhaps disable windows firewall? reset IE defaults?

Re: Boot up PC then delay of about 1 hour until internet works

Hi

I use ccleaner on my own PC so can vouch for that - will give it a go - thanks!

Eset NOD32 is being used as virus protection and firewall. I did discover Windows firewall was also turned on, and have disabled that. Adaware and the like have been run, and I've used hijacklog and sysinternals process explorer to check for uninvited guests - it looks clear.

How do we reset IE defaults?

Regards

Comodo Registry Cleaner beats CCCleaner hands down, download it run it and it will prove it.

http://registry-cleaner.comodo.com/

I wish I could run it in work but have to use CCCleaner because Comodo requires admin rights

Gets rid of a lot but then I use other programs as well and I am not going to list them, I would look a bit Paranoid.

I know that is why I run the other tools on my machine and you are probably the same, at least if our computers goes belly up we are not fazed by it, we just sort it.

You need to run a thorough virus scan and also remove trojans and malware. Try SDFIX. I tried it and it cleared the malware and trojans. It runs in safemode but works for sure.
