It would be interesting to know who has been panicked in to clear out their safe deposit box and whether the banks security cameras have been tweaked to watch who comes out of the security area with a bulging briefcase.

I was under the impression the police could not go into a strong room opening security boxes on mass, if they suspected a certain person was concealing something illegal and they had proof, a judge would authorize a search warrant. It seems very strange indeed they have been able to open 7000 boxes, unless they were in some way interconnected but it doesn't seem likely though.

Presumably they had a large amount of evidence gathered over time that was sufficient to justify their action.

I would guess if the police really wanted to they could sequestrate anything between 60 and 80% of the uk's entire economy under the proceeds of crime act, fortunately for most they choose not to partially for same reason as they choose to permit speed cameras with an allowance well over the one used for manual speed busting, however maybe the government should bear this in mind when they deny paying respectable wage increases that fall well below true inflation levels.
