Odd fault (Scart lead?)

Panasonic DVD. Worked fine since new (about a year ago).

Out of the blue, a series of error messages (U80, U81, etc).
Each time I turned the DVD off to clear the error message, the VCR (which similarly had worked fine for a year or so) turned off, then when I turned the DVD back on, the VCR came back on!

So, playing a hunch, I put a new SCART lead on between the two machines, and so far it is ok, i.e. no error messages, and if I turn the DVD off, then on, the VCR doesn't react.

Question, then: could a duff SCART lead cause such a fault? What puzzles me even more is that the scart lead has also been sitting there for the past year, unmoved.

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Re: Odd fault (Scart lead?)

Update:

Well, it was ok for 24 hours, now gone back to U80. Switch off/switch on has no affect on the VCR, and clears the U80.

So I'm hoping it's just a one-off fault, and I'll leave it alone, but I'd still be interested in any light you can throw on it.
