Talking I was undecided - went for an Elite 360

I really, really hope I don't start WWIII here!

I've one of those 'landmark' birthdays coming up and I'd already got my present. But I wasn't happy with it, so I sold it this morning.

I then had to do some quick reading up on what I thought would be the best console to get, given that I NEED to play GTA4 as soon as possible.
PS3 or Xbox 360. Well, I was swayed somewhat by the brilliant price I could get the Elite for, but I kinda fancied it anyway. Always been a Sony fan, but I was reading things about putting Linux onto the Xbox and streaming this and that - that got me easily suckered!
Whatever console I got I needed it to play DivX coz my player is shot, and I read the 360 plays AVI's better.

Hope I made the right choice anyway - looking forward to a bit of COD4 and GTA4 this weekend.

Dare I ask what anyone thinks are the current pro's and con's of the 360 in comparison to the PS3 or am I asking for trouble?
I'd go to a dedicated forum, but I like it here, and there's less text speak.

PS3 = Blueray
360 = No Blueray

I have a 360 and its broken 5 times and been replaced 5 times - other than that, if you can put up with not having it for 2-4 weeks one a year or so - you will be fine

My 360 had the RROD on 14th April. I had it collected by UPS at 6pm on 15th April and it was delivered to MS at 11:30am on the 16th. It was repaired and dispatched back to me on the 19th April. So, a 3 day turnaround, not bad really!

Re: I was undecided - went for an Elite 360

Cheers.

BR is not an issue for me (so far) - I took that into consideration.

Yeah, the RROD - what's the problem there?
Have to say heard of loads of returns but all with good endings.

Generally on the first instance its the motherboard over heating. Then leads to the GPU over Heating

Re: I was undecided - went for an Elite 360

Well I have a launch console and its still going strong.

Have a PS3 as well and it doesn't get used much.

Also the 360's online service is 100 times better than the PS3 one.

you made a good choice.

Ah great.
Have to say, I've not got the thing yet - still waiting on the discount being confirmed.
I'm not impatient - honest..

Re: I was undecided - went for an Elite 360

The most important thing is that you enjoy what you got BUT i for one will never touch another M$ console product again my 360 broke 3 times and that was enough for me to trade it in after i bought a ps3 , and i wish to god that i bought the ps3 in the first place , for me its class and its a way better console than the 360.
Blue ray is amazing and i think when PS3 home is up and running it will wipe the floor with what m$ has to offer , why pay to play online with M$ when the ps3 can do it just as well i have not had any problems whatsover playing online with different games with the ps3 so i am sony all the way this time , just my humble thoughts :-)

Re: I was undecided - went for an Elite 360

How long ago did it break BD?
Do you know if they're *still* failing?
I mean, if it's under warranty and M$ fix it, I'm happy with that.

I'm curious to know if anyone's running either console as a media player.

All my machines are networked and the last one TV out's to the telly, but the GFX is pants.
I'd love to be able to send an avi over the network to a HDD on a console and run it from there.
Admittedly, I've not seen that this is as straight forward as I might imagine. Damned hard work trying to find simple info sometimes.

Yep, mine has broken once and the turnaround was 3 days, the 360 breaking is nowhere near a big a deal as webcrawler2050 is making out, you made the right choice kryogenik

I occasionally use my 360 to stream music and movie from my Mac, I use a prog called connect 360 to help me do this however I believe that using windows its a lot more straight forward. I have been able to play most of my xvid/divx avi files.

The newer consoles are a lot more reliable due to the better processors that are meant to run cooler

You can do that on the PS3, but I dont think you can on the 360.

Oh, my mistake then. I must have been Googling earlier stuff (Xbox not 360? Bloomin' Google doesn't half prioritise some old crud lately..!?) - but it looks like they're working on it now.
It's FAR from a pre-requisite, I just found it interesting from a purely geek point of view - but cheers for that.

Yeah, I love my PS3 too, it sits snugly unused in its box and makes a perfect stable platform for my 360!
