Upgrade from 2Mb to 4Mb

Hi I was on 2Mb and fancied upgrading to 4Mb so I rang 150 and spoke to nice lady who said I could for an extra £7. I then asked if there was a free wireless router and the extras like I had seen on the web, she I would have to pay an extra £40 to get this. Is that right? Your advice please.

Yet when you go through the motions on the site you get this message

"Wireless Broadband
Current Services
Telephone
Broadband Internet
Digital TV

New Services

Virgin Broadband
Size: XL

Installation charges apply
Selection Package Description Cost
Channel Description Cost
Wireless Router Add wireless broadband to your service with a Virgin wireless kit. If you need an adapter or laptop card to connect your computer to your Virgin wireless kit, you can select this below.
£40.00 one-off charge.

FREEto existing non-broadband customers taking Broadband Size: L or XL."

Note the part in bold.

This would be me upgrading from 4MB to 20MB

Ring up again and say you will take the upgrade to 4meg if they include the router, if not then call back on 150 and wait for the "thinking of leaving us option" and say your going to BE or BT because they will give you a router and Virgin will not.

Do the above if you have not yet accepted an upgrade yet, it usually works as they do not want to loose customers.

Re: Upgrade from 2Mb to 4Mb

If you migrate through Virgin Media selfcare online then you can get the £7 knocked off for the first month.

To be honest I haven't seen and difference between 2MB and 4MB. The only one thats different is the 20MB.

I think they need to alter the speeds to be honest fo example:

2MB customers should be upgraded to 8MB for the current price for £18
4MB customers should be upgraded to 16MB for the current price £25
20MB customers should stay the same for now until 50MB service has been introduced and those existing 20MB should be offered 50MB for the same price as the current 20MB which is currently £35.

Although you cant really compare Virgin Broadband with other providers such as Sky Broadband because its a totally different product(Cable Broadband and ADSL Broadbad, two seperate things). However, they do need to remain competitive and the speeds need to be increased for the prices we're paying.

The 4Mb is currently being upgraded to 10Mb and should be completed by June.

Re: Upgrade from 2Mb to 4Mb

Yeah just noticed that on there site. Now i'm puzzled! Because i've just done a speed test (CF speed test) and this is what it showed:Overall Average Speed = approx 17088 Kbps, 16.69 MbpsDoes this mean my broadband is nearly 17MB? Or is this an estimation as to what the maximum speed can be on my street?

BenMcr posted this update to the thread "Wireless Broadband is coming" about revised charges for the wireless router a couple of days ago:

Due to the popularity of the routers and as a SHORT TERM MEASURE ONLY, the wireless routers will cost £40, with no minimum contract, for ALL existing broadband customers. This applies to existing M L and XL customers whether upgrading or not.

New broadband customer prices are not affected

In addition to what I posted in the quote above, no-one, not even Customer Relations can offer the router free to existing customer at the moment.

Re: Upgrade from 2Mb to 4Mb

This is strange. I upgraded from 2Mb to 4Mb 2 weeks ago and they sent me the free router when I asked for it.

My brother also upgraded last week from 2 to 4 and again they sent him a free router no problem.

All we did was phone customer services, press 500 buttons from their stupid automated phone system to finally get through to the upgrade team and bingo quicker internet in 15 mins and a free router in 2 days.

Looks like they must be runnning out or getting very tight.

Re: Upgrade from 2Mb to 4Mb

Yes but last week is not this week is it? The change only happened on Tuesday

And it is only because they want to make sure of stock levels. Once they can get back to a comfortable level, the existing customer offer WILL return.

Re: Upgrade from 2Mb to 4Mb

Thanks for your help everyone. It still says this online:

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/webs...uct.do?id=3264

Get up to 4Mb - with up to 10Mb rolling out now
No download limits
Free Broadband Extras - exclusive content worth over £35 a month
Download a music track◊ in under 10 seconds
Perfect if you need extra speed to send photos or download music
Free Wireless Router

Still confused, what about the extras? How do I get these?
