Re: £10 for 20 cigarettes

LOL thank god I stopped on the 1st of jan (afternoon)

but if that happens then everybody that smokes will go to the mainland at least 3x per year, the only companies benefiting from this would be Eurostar, the ferry companies, Calais and in the same way the French gov.

or yes you get your spain trips and just anywhere on the continent where fags are cheaper.

I gave up 22 years ago. One of the best things I ever did.

My OH always wanted to give up but said they enjoyed it too much. They stopped last October and now can't think why they didn't do it earlier. They hate to be around other people smoking now!

Re: £10 for 20 cigarettes

I wonder what the government would do to fill the huuuuuuggggee black hole left in the finances if everyone who smokes stopped overnight?

The amount taken in in tax dwarfs the amount spend on healthcare for smoking related illnesses.

Re: £10 for 20 cigarettes

think its time for some panic buying before that!!

nah, only jokin, hope it happens, would finally give me the push i need to stop i think.
seriusly doubt it though, as derek said, the government makes way too much money off it and dont really want to risk losing all the money they would from the amount of people it would force to quit.

Re: £10 for 20 cigarettes

If every one quit, who would make up the deficit in revenue to HMG ? As a non drinker I, as a teetotaler, would welcome a savage tax on any kind of booze and the misery it causes, not to mention time lost from work and vandalism to public property all in the pursuit of ethanol consumption.

Re: £10 for 20 cigarettes

I just think the amount of money people would save if they didnt buy cigarettes, they would save a fortune !

I hope it convinces some more people to quit.

i'd say thats a bit unfair. i enjoy a drink, as most guys of my age do, but i never cause any trouble with a drink in me, have never missed a day of work due to ethanol consumtion, and have certainly never vandalised property, so why not... instead of punishing people who go out and drink responsibly, impose higher fines on those who are caught committing offences when drunk?

Re: £10 for 20 cigarettes

Well this won't affect me as i no longer (well not for the last month) get my tobacco in the UK. Tax away government and rejoice all you anti-smoking people until they lose too much cash and everyone has to start paying extra tax and with this government you know it won't take them long to raise income tax . Being honest i have an appointment next week for some smoking clinic to stop and it is not the price or those pathetic health warnings that have impacted me or encouraged me to stop. They should stop all the advert's and tax as from what i have ever seen it has zero impact on those that are not already thinking about stopping.

Why persecute the smokers when registered drug addicts get their fixes for free?
Us smokers have to pay for our cigarettes and we already pay far too much tax on the product already.!!!!
How about we get our ciggies on the NHS?

If that happens, watch other taxes go through the roof.
