What a joke. This guy is in cloud cuckoo land. The only swearing a lot of teenagers do is outside the local offy when they are trying to blag someone into buying them a six pack of Stella.

"Allegiance"

And no-one should be forced to swear allegiance to anything, it's wrong.

Leave the queen alone, it's not her idea.

I don't think you should pledge to the queen. I've nothing against pledging to your country and your fellow countrymen however.

But all in all, it is a silly headline grabber and will probably not come to anything.

Re: allegence to queen and country

When they were talking about it on Radio 2, phone callers were saying things like "people who don't should be ejected from the UK". Muppets.

Re: allegence to queen and country

Ejected from the UK haha! What a collection of closed minded ponses.

I, as has already been said, would pledge allegiance to England, but not to the monarchy, and ill do it of my own free will, not because some money grabber in a corrupt government makes it compulsary. And the same will go for my kids if and when they come to existence.

Re: allegence to queen and country

I have already taken an oath and have always stuck to it but what is the point of making a bunch of teenagers take something that they havn't thought about. An oath only means something if the person taking it fully understands what it means and i am not having a go at the kids of today but it is not something they have needed to think about. This is just politics at it's most tasteless and sadly thats what we have come to expect from this bunch.

Re: allegence to queen and country

Swear allegiance to the Queen to become a citizen? We are "subjects" of the Monarchy and therfore cannot become "citizens" until this becomes a Republic?

Re: allegence to queen and country

Much better to educate the kids throught their childhood as to why they may wish to pledge allegence to the Queen and country rather than just force them to go through the motions which will build resentment amongst many.

Unfortunately we stopped being subjects in 1983.
Now the only British subjects are people born before 1949 in the Republic of Ireland, India and Pakistan who did not acquire citizenship of their country or any other Dominion (in the case of those born in India and Pakistan), or who applied after 1949 for restoration of their British subject status (for those connected with Ireland).
British citizens are not British subjects under the 1981 Act (which came into force in 83). The only circumstance where a person may be both a British subject and British citizen simultaneously is a case where a British subject connected with Ireland (s. 31 of the 1981 Act) acquires British citizenship by naturalisation or registration. In this case only, British subject status is not lost upon acquiring British citizenship.

The status of British subject cannot now be transmitted by descent, and will become extinct when all existing British subjects are dead.
