This is bloody awful

After bad browsing issues all weekend, not being able to hold a connection for longer than 30 seconds. Unable to connect to xbox live, poor MSN connection and a unpromising conversation with customer support earlier over the fact they don't offer ANY support when using a router this is now my connection speeds after upgrading the firmware on it:

It's meant to be 4MB. Aaaaaaaaaaaaagh! Cable Forum! Help me!

Re: This is bloody awful

Also try downloading some files from here [http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/] with both, modem / router & modem.

Ping some response times as well

start >> run >> cmd >> ping www.bb.co.uk

Also go to 192.168.1.100 and then status and post the up & down results from both.

Re: This is bloody awful

Support woman told me to download those files. Doing a speedtest without the router gave normal results. So if it was the router, what can I do to fix it? Already reset to factory settings and updated firmware. I bought the router from my work so I'm going to take it back and get a different one tomorrow if I can't fix this one.

tbh bud... naff all .. you need a new router.

i have been in the same situation as you with netgear routers... and funnily enough.. one of which was supplied by Virgin Media when i was on a 10 meg con..
now im on 20 and dont get above 10 (pretty similar to your own)

if you are going for a router... i would recommend the Linksys WRT54G
its cheap... it works and iv had it for 4 years... and i liked it so much so...
i just moved address... left my parents mine and bought myself another one for this house..

full 20mb in 2 addresses woohoo...

Hi all, first post

Would have to agree with laineY, the Linksys is superb. had mine for 3 years and not a problem. I also get full speed on the tests.

Well the one now is a Belkin one. If that one works I'll get it off Amazon. I think this router has been playing up for ages. Youtube would never load and certain torrent clients would never work.

That the linksys one there?

Re: This is bloody awful

So new router has fixed it, but the torrent problem still remains. Running them for any length of time will shut off the modem and router. Is virgin messing about the bit torrent protocol at all or just during peak hours?

Torrent problem: Could be firewall - PC & router.

Not aware of VM doing a comcast! lol

VM is not blocking any port reqd. by the torrent programs. Just check the firewall configuration.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (ya know, those things before CDs...), having too few half-open connections will stall your downloads.

TorrentFreak wrote an accessible explanation of the problem over 2 years ago -- the article focuses on bittorrent but the same is applicable for all P2P apps.

More technical info and the downloadable patching routine is available from LviLord.de.
