Just what we needed - someone to point out the absurdity of the whole thing.
Mind you, Red Dwarf did it in Back to Reality:

Oh, look at the time - 1984 already (i.e. children expected to rat on family and friends if they spoke out against the state). More and more I'm convinced the only thing Orwell got wrong was the date. Someone once asked me if anyone in the government had actually read 1984 - my own uneasy feeling is that many of them have, but instead of seeing it as the cautionary tale Orwell intended it to be, they instead thought 'ooh, what a good idea!'.
For the nth time, I note once again I do not intend to disappear from public view at any time in the near future.
