Question s/w update and broken modems

Can some one tell me what the story is about NTL having sent a software update to cable modems which caused many of them to fail?

My connection died the same day (but not a modem fault as my analog TV connection also died) and I am having to wait 6 days for an engineer as they are all busy fixing the broken modems!
