Post Surround sound to work with my Tv.

Hi i have looked everywhere on here and on the interenet for help but havent found anything that helps or really makes sense???
I have a Philips surround sound system, it come with the dvd player seperate so the dvd player is joined in with the dvd player. The surround sound works fine out of the dvd player when connected with the Red and White wire (not sure wot its called?) but if i try and connect the red and white one to the Philips LCD tv the surround sound will not work? Ive tried it in all of the different red and white socket options on the tv and surround sound, at the minute just the surround sound and dvd player are connected?

Sorry if i sound a total wally but just like it to work out of my tv and dont know how to go about it so any help will be much appreciated
