Thumbs down xp sp2 and modem compatibility

Hi Guys
I recently upgraded my pc os from xp pro to xp pro sp2 because i wanted to use an MTP device (mp3 player) with my pc and you need sp2 for compatibility reasons.

After install i plugged in the modem and the "setting up your network" bubble popped up as normal.
After a couple of minutes of inactivity a message popped up saying "ip could not be verified you have little or no connectivity. it may not be possible to connect to the internet. click here to repair."

As commanded i clicked and about 3 mins later got the same message with "cannot update ip address, your router or modem may not be functioning properly. contact you equipment manufacturer"

A friend of mine had a similar problem and after a down grade back to xp it worked!

So a reformat and installation of my old xp disk and what do you know!? instant connection as soon as i plugged in the modem and restarted!

Now i have my pc duel booting xp on c drive and XP sp2 on D drive! if i boot to XP no problems if i boot to xp sp2 nothing!

Any ideas before i ring India!?

Re: xp sp2 and modem compatibility

How are you connecting the modem? USB or network cable?

Re: xp sp2 and modem compatibility

Strange one this, the only thing I can think is the problem are as mentioned above, if your connecting via USB, then there might be a driver issue. I know my MB has two types of USB, USB and USB2 some devices won't work on the older USB mode.

Iv'e had XP pro on with SP2 with two cable modems, SurfBoard and Scientific Atlanta and both didn't need to be loaded up. Both connected direct to the Ethernet socket direct by cable from the modem. This included several fresh installs of xp and sp2.

If your connected direct from the modem, try your network/Internet settings, in the control panel, and see if "connect via LAN" is enabled.

Try going to your computer or motherboard manufacturer's website and looking for any updated drivers for your Ethernet port.

The modem is compatibile with SP2 (in fact, due to the way ethernet works, neither your computer nor modem has any idea what's on the other end of the cable, just that some device that happens to talk the same language is).

Re: xp sp2 and modem compatibility

Have you rebooted the modem? ie, reboot modem, then startup XPsp2.

Re: xp sp2 and modem compatibility

Very odd. SP2 shouldn't cause any issues, and certainly shouldn't affect the modem. I'd suggest it must be something with your PC's configurations. Is there a firewall or something blocking it?

It's not necessary to use the Virgin Media install CD. Indeed that can complicate stuff adding to the "junk" already on your PC's settings. Simple auto detect of the IP in the network settings should suffice, especially if your modem's connection has previously been activated.

Re: xp sp2 and modem compatibility

The settings are basically to receive the IP automatically from the modem.

Couple of things you can try - maybe the SP2 install corrupted something, especially if it was an upgrade. Try deleting the network card from the hardware devices, reboot the PC, and allow it to reload the card. What happens if you do an ipconfig / release and renew?
