			ok - i fixed it now!when i said i had done the power up in sequence - i forgot about the virgin modem and hadn't been cycling the power on that.
 so i powered EVERYTHINg off, virgin modem, netgear router and pc
 then i powered up - modem, router, pc in that order
 
 router is set to "no login required", username entered (don't know if it's needed), and "use computer mac address" (likewise).
