What's a reliable alternative Broadband provider?

I'm not after the 'fastest' BB service anymore. I finally gave up on the fastest Virgin have to offer after years of being with NTL and C&W before them, and dropped to the lowest speed. Got tech services coming round Friday (my BB knocks off twice a week for a day or more each time) but I'm more or less resigned to finding another provider. Speed not an issue, reliability is.

So what do we think of Sky Broadband, Bethere, or any of the others? I tried Plusnet a while back (whilst still running NTL as well - lots of BB services into the house for that year ) so won't be going back to them (they said 8mb, gave me just over 2mb).

I'd better get looking about on the i/net for another provider whilst I still can - no telling when the service will drop off again

depends on how far you are from the exchange with your adsl speeds, it is possible that your line will only achieve 2meg

Re: What's a reliable alternative Broadband provider?

That's all I'm on now with VM. Just tested the line speed as a matter of interest and it just about scraped 600kb. I dropped from 20mb to 2mb, they can't even do that right.

Sky's pricing seems quite attractive - anyone have dealings with them? So long as it doesn't drop twice a week for a couple of days I'm willing to take a chance. Of course, if it does do that I'll keep looking

Yeah, Zen broadband are pretty much the best out there. A friend had them, customer service was second to none etc..

If you are in a serviced area (check with http://www.samknows.com ), Be are excellent. Seems to be a reliable service, and in the event of a problem, Be's customer service is quite good.

Re: What's a reliable alternative Broadband provider?

Just been on the Zen forum and they seem to be as bad as anyone. Bad speeds etc etc.

Coudl this just be a nationwide issue that potentially will never be sorted ?

I am seriously looking at going elsewhere, but is it a case of the grass is not always greener /

Re: What's a reliable alternative Broadband provider?

The VM cheerleader pops up with another super-constructive post

Be are very, very good a friend of mine worships them in every way.

If there's no LLU available Zen are consistently superb, BT are also very reliable.

Steer clear of Virgin DSL, it's awful, over contended nastiness, avoid Tiscali like the plague, and think carefully before taking Pipex, AOL, or any super cheap providers. If the price is too good to be true the service won't be.

Re: What's a reliable alternative Broadband provider?

I'd vote for Plus.net. I'm with Sky and wouldn't recomend them. but I set my nan up with Plus.net two years ago and they're great. Fast, reliable, great self service pages. Upto 8Mbit for ~£15.00 a month (with an 8GB cap*) but does great for occational surfing and email/video/photos.

We don't believe in selling 'unlimited broadband' that's bound by a fair use policy. We'd rather be upfront with you and give you clear usage allowances, with FREE overnight usage.

That is actually really good to see them being so transparent and specific.
