sky broadband

hi all im new to this forum. but i have run into a problem that sky broadbands call centre over in INDIA are too annoying to correct. i spent the last month battling with sky's indian call centre and they keep giving me a solution i knew before i even called them. best solution they gave me was plug the modem directly into the bt phoneline(at the time i was talking to the guy and totally unfamiliar with adsl or bt fone sockets so i nievley unscrewed the front panel.) test socket where ofcourse i didnt realise it lost connection( wonder where that warning was on there computer screens) so as it stands i constantly got to recconnect the modem to get a 5 min internet connection and if i am lucky it will last a hour like it currently is. wat i need is a solution to it. and im only 3km from the exhange (1.67km in a straightline).

Re: sky broadband

The indians over at sky done that. i just tried switching the upnp off apperently is locks the router up and also set my wireless to auto. apperently that fixes it and is based on a old version of the firmware. could it actually be the router faulty as a long shot? if it is i got a non sky bt router in the attic i never used (as i am VM customer and the sky connection is my dads)

Re: sky broadband

What exactly is the problem?

Has turning off UPnP helped at all?

Did using the hidden test socket behind the faceplate on the BT master socket help?

Which Sky BB service are you on? Connect, Base, Mid, or Max?

Router stats? i.e. downstream sync speed, attenuation, & noise margin.

Re: sky broadband

Plugging into the test socket is the best way to check for line issues, if you connect to the test socket (with filter) and your connection is still c**p then it's a line issue. If you connect to the test socket (with filter) and the connection is fine then either the main socket on the front plate is damaged or something on the line is causing the issue. I take it nothing else is plugged into the line while you are testing it?

Re: sky broadband

this is what i have done according to sky tech support this mornnig before it died again. im on the max package

1. tech support checked line it was fine
2. checked wat lights were showing on modem
3. disabled mcafee firewall
4. plug straight into test socket
5. check router settings.
6 check and reset web settings to wat they require.
6. they escalated me to tier 3 as i got disconnected as soon as i got off the fone to a nice northerner women. called julie i think. (she laughd when i ripped into indian tech support and tried to convince me sum of em are good. then agreed they were rubbish)

i tried the UPNP and setting wirelessto auto 108mps i actually got a lil stability. lasted 2 hours last nite. supppose it beats 5-15 mins connection like normal.

Re: sky broadband

Turning off UPnP should help with some disconnections.... there's a bug in the firmware apparently.

I'd leave it off, & set up any port forwarding if required.

As for the rest of the problems...

Did using the test socket improve things at all?

How long did you leave it connected using the test socket? Did it disconnect?

Router stats? i.e. downstream sync speed, attenuation, & noise margin.

.. preferably for using your normal connection method, -and- for using the test socket.

Re: sky broadband

I use mossywell's Bounce Sky Router - an excellent little app

It's main function, though, will not fix your problem - all it will do is auto-reboot the router every time Bounce detects a loss of connectivity [by pings to Google & eBay timing out]. That won't sort whatever the root cause of your problem is.

Also has other handy functions... it can auto-reboot the router when the noise margin drops to a user-defined level, & can also force the router to resync with a particular noise margin. Combined, they're very useful.

As previously said, you really need to obtain your router stats when connected normally & when connected via the test socket, then post 'em up.

As Paul said, the test socket will help determine whether the problem is actually something at your end or not.

Many problems people have with ADSL (whether with Sky or someone else) actually turn out to be due to something at their end (e.g. their own extension wiring), rather than something caused by BT or the ISP.

Using the test socket bypasses all the extension wiring.

Improvement with test socket > sort your wiring out.
