New member says hello But boy is my connection slow
Hello i hope i can get some satisfaction here "Just Call Me Mick"
Anyway i have been doing some tests and have had issues with speed for the past 4 months and have been fobbed off by blue yonder and now virgin
I had a new modem installed scientific atlanta 2100 and am still underwhelmed
I got back in touch with the virgin fob off department who assured me my connection is perfect i was still not convinced and they apparently put me through to an independent help site who assured me my connection was fine.
He said that with a 10Mbs connection i should get a download speed of up to 1024 kbs but anything over 700 was OK
I came here and have found a new test i did
Please note i am on the superfast 10Mbs connection
I have checked my modem here is what it reads
Name
WebSTAR EPC2100R2 Modem Serial Number 207752797
Cable Modem MAC Address **:**:**:**:**:**
Hardware Version 2.1
Software Version v2.0.2r1256-060303
Receive Power Level 2.7 dBmV
Transmit Power Level 57.5 dBmV
Cable Modem Status Operational
Your thoughts please

Re: New member says hello But boy is my connection slow
Try the speed test on this forum (top of each page). Unlike most of the site, it's hosted within the Virgin network, so should give a better indication of your speed than speedtest.
 to the forum, BTW.

Thank you for your thoughts Zinglebarb
Are you saying my results are acceptable if not using a download manager ?

Re: New member says hello But boy is my connection slow
Nope the results are nearer 1mb than 10mb, how are you connecting to the modem (router, direct)?
Also could you:
ping 212.58.224.36
tracert 212.58.224.36
via the command prompt, thanks...
edit... the above IP address is the BBC website

No, They aren't.
I would call customer services to get them to check your connection. While I wouldn't expect to see the full 10Mbps on our speed test (most peoples connections give around 7 or 8 Mbps), it should be greater than 1.
How are you connected to the Modem?
Via a router? if not, do you use USB or Ethernet to connect?

What firewall are you using? Some firewalls can cause big decreases in speeds in not setup or even after a routine update has been applied.

Re: New member says hello But boy is my connection slow
Hopefully I am on the right track here, does your last name end in "ell"?,
If so I have taken a look at your modem and its connectivity to the uBR and it appears to be fine at the moment,
In regard to your "mass of packets" at the moment the connection is doing nothing, I have also checked the upstream SNR (somthing that can only be checked from the uBR) this too is fine, there are no dropped packets between you and the uBR and response times with pings up to the MTU (excluding overheads) are also fine :
ubr05enfi#sh cable modem 0019.****.**** QOS
Sfid Dir Curr Sid Sched Prio MaxSusRate MaxBrst MinRsvRate Throughput
State Type
3275 US act 4644 BE 1 384000 1522 0 107 << Hardly any traffic @ the mo
17192 DS act N/A BE 0 10240000 3044 0 66 << Hardly any traffic @ the mo
ubr05enfi#ping 10.***.*.** repeat 200 size 1420
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 200, 1420-byte ICMP Echos to 10.***.*.**, timeout is 2 seconds:
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!
Success rate is 100 percent (200/200), round-trip min/avg/max = 16/30/56 ms
ubr05enfi#
I would suggest you try disabling the antivirus and try a different cat5 cable between the modem and PC... The above also shows that you are provisioned correctly.
The local area does however suffer from bandwidth issues however the levels would not cause the severety of issues you are seeing.
Best of luck...

It might !
Anyway cybernetic_tiger i connected a laptop to the modem different with a different cable
Run the speed test 9983 Kbps S***e i thought i was going to have to dish out some humble pie
Run the test again 4000 Kbps
And again 2000 Kbps
Just run again
Fri, 27 Apr 2007 18:14:18 GMT
1st 512K took 2954 ms = 173.3 KB/sec, approx 1428 Kbps, 1.39 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2845 ms = 180 KB/sec, approx 1483 Kbps, 1.45 Mbps
3rd 512K took 981 ms = 521.9 KB/sec, approx 4300 Kbps, 4.2 Mbps
4th 512K took 1112 ms = 460.4 KB/sec, approx 3794 Kbps, 3.71 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 2751 Kbps, 2.69 Mbps
So nothing has changed from the first test so it cant be my machine ,have the batteries run out again at your end ?
Phil

Re: New member says hello But boy is my connection slow
Well I have taken another look and it would appear it could be as I predicted and an issue with utilisation in your area, you should call faults and get a call logged. I can't promise that they will do anything but if enough people complain then they will notice the impact of the issue.
I could move you to another upstream with lower utilisation but that won't do much good as the upstreams are all now load balanced by the number of online modems so it may only 'fix' the issue for an hour or two and that would just mask the issue and make it even harder to get faults attention :
ubr05enfi#sh int c4/1 mac-scheduler | inc util
Avg upstream channel utilization : 38%
Avg upstream channel utilization : 65% << Your upstream
Avg upstream channel utilization : 27%
Avg upstream channel utilization : 39%
ubr05enfi#
Unfortunatly I can only offer you advice as I don't work within the consumer division but there may be someone on here who will take on your fight...

Re: New member says hello But boy is my connection slow
Thank you cybernetic_tiger
I checked them all the way at 10 minute intervals up to 9pm still under 1mb never got higher than 3mbs
I tried the same test at 2am still only 4Mbs
Been on to VM downgraded to the 1Mbs
If i could only "Be There" have to wait a while for them to come to this area then its bye bye VM, Phone, Internet And TV
Thoroughly disgusted
Phil
