Bloody NAT
Ever since I setup my Netgear WGR614v6 router my NAT has been set to "Strict" on Xbox Live. I know I can forward ports, but to do that I'd have to setup a static IP, wouldn't I? I've been to portforward.com, also.

Re: Bloody NAT
Yep, the 360 needs a static IP if you forward the XBL ports to it.

Re: Bloody NAT
Ah, Matt, haven't been on Live too much recently. But when I do come on, probably tonight - around 9 ish...fancy a few?
Oh, and how do I setup a Static IP for the Xbox?
Cheers

Re: Bloody NAT
Can't tonight, I'm afraid. Had a few hours on the 360 earlier, but now Ally is watching American Idol, & then 24 is on at 9pm.
If you fancy playing some GoW etc. with those of us in the NTHW clan then there's usually at least a few of us online on Tuesday & Thursday each week, around 8/9pm onwards
Static IP...
Go to the 360's network settings, in the system blade.
Change everything from automatic to manual...
Manual IP, within the router's range, & not an IP the router is going to dish out to something else via DHCP (so perhaps cut down the DHCP pool on the router).
Default Gateway - set this to the router's IP
DNS - set the 1st to the router's IP, & leave the 2nd empty [or use your ISP's DNS IPs if you want... doesn't really matter].
Subnet mask - 255.255.255.0

Re: Bloody NAT
The WGR614 supports uPNP so there shouldn't be any need to forward ports for Xbox Live. Have you enabled it?

Re: Bloody NAT
Yeah. I've also disabled the firewall and enabled "respond to ping on internet port" which is what I believe to be ICMP. It's bloody ridiculous, but if I have to, I'll do what Matt recommended (cheers for that Matt).

Re: Bloody NAT
Do you have anything in the DMZ by any chance? I've got a 614 and a couple of other spare routers sat here and I know one of them ignores any port forwards you have configured if you put a host in the DMZ... can't for the life of me remember if it's the Netgear which does that.

Re: Bloody NAT
Nope, nothing in the DMZ. What exactly is it, anyway? Does it allow all traffic from any port through?

Re: Bloody NAT
Takes it name from "Demilitarised Zone" a la Korea etc.
If you stick something in the DMZ on a router, it's basically open to everything. All ports open.

As for the NAT probs...
I've found UPNP to be a pain sometimes, with different routers, Linksys, Netgear, etc. I just forward the relevant ports now, rather than use UPNP. Never have NAT problems with XBL now.
