Exclamation Fixing a TOMTOM

Hello,

I've been offered a TOMTOM 700 that has suffered one too many drops and it's now knackered. The screen will turn on and do the little tune but that's it and you need to reset it to turn it off.

However I was thinking that I maybe able to get it fixed and get £300 sat nav fixed at a lower price. My problem is that I seem to only be able ton find repair services online and one site wanted to charge £23+ just for me to send it and then give me a quote!

Does anyone know of a good reptuable company or a premises somewhere on the southcoast? I can cover from Chichester to Poole if neccessary.

Many thanks for any advice!

Re: Fixing a TOMTOM

700 runs from SD card, doesn't it? What happens when you power up without the card? Does it whinge that the card isn't present? In that case it may just be the build of the app on the card...

Re: Fixing a TOMTOM

I looked at a few sites for tom tom repairs last month, they were all very expensive around £70, better off with new

But I would still save £30! What websites/companies did you use?

Re: Fixing a TOMTOM

Suppose you have to consider whether the backing of a 12 month warranty, brand new untampered with internals, and the latest firmware/hardware, are worth £30.

Errr - I believe the 700 has a hard disk... well a mini HDD or something...

Edit - yep it does - think it's about 2.5GB

Re: Fixing a TOMTOM

Speaking of Tomtom's my TT1 v2 has decided not to bootup untill I eject the SD card and put it back in ever since I updated it.

Its had another update since and that's not fixed the problem
Mind you not been plugged into the pc for a while so Should I check for updatges again?
It seems to be crashing on shutdown at a guess.

What exactly does it do while it's on? What shows on the screen?

Re: Fixing a TOMTOM

Ahh righto. Not too familiar with the 700. Does it show up as a drive when you connect it to your PC/Mac? I'm thinking if it powers up and does the drums it should be saveable...

Yes it will show as a drive - but then so will an SD card!

Re: Fixing a TOMTOM

@Lsainsbury: I'm not quite sure what you're saying. If the embedded memory in a 700 shows up as a drive then the OP can rebuild the TomTom software which may help.

@Wicked: True.
