New digital camera
Hello
I am thinking of buying a new digital camera and wondered what people thought of the Sony W70 7.2 Megapixel.
See info HERE
I used to have a 3.2 megapixel so this will be a good leap for me.
I know you can go even higher, like 10 Megapixel but I don't really see myself needing it.
As long as I can take good colourful, true to life photos, have red eye reduction, and some auto settings for things like sunsets, etc, I'd be happy.
Does anyone reccomend it or have any views on it?
Maybe you would reccomend something else ?
Many thanks for your help.
halcyon.

Re: New digital camera
It gets a good write up here and is also listed on the best buy section, on the same site.
It's also covered here, the pics look pretty good to me.

Re: New digital camera
The only thing that I would look at is a really good zoom, say 12X which equates to about 420 mm and image stabilisation but then you would have to have a bulkier camera, just something for you to think about

It's a trade off, a nice compact 3x zoom which you carry with you all the time. Or a 10x-12x which too big to carry around in your pocket.
I've a Rioch RR30 which is always with me and an Olympus OM10 and a bag full of lenses etc gathering dust in the cupboard.

Re: New digital camera
Many thanks for your comments so far.
I would be going for the black model.
Although a 12x zoom is good, I think they are a little expensive for me. I want to try and not go above £160-200 if possible.
3x zoom should be fine for what I would use it for.
I was looking at one of the Canon's earlier and Nikon cameras as I used to have a Nikon Coolpix but they seem to have got bulkier and plastic looking.
This Sony seems a better build.

Re: New digital camera
Hi everyone.
Thought I would give an update.... Thinking of going with the W100 and am going to buy from www.buyacamera.co.uk.
Anyone used them before?. They seem to be genuine.
Thanks

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 is a very good 6mp camera with 12x optical zoom and well within your price range. Although it looks like a traditional 35mm type camera it is quite small and light apparently.
Also the Nikon S10 is a 7mp pocket sized (just) camera with 10x optical zoom - again available for under £200.
There's no substitute for optical quality so I'd recommend concentrating more on that than the ccd sensitivity since no amount of pixels will make up for a bad lens.

Re: New digital camera
Just a quick update....
I decided to go for a standard digital camera with a few extra features, but fine for taking out everywhere and getting general shots.
I bought the Sony W100 8.1 Megapixel. £156
I've only had a quick play with it so far but it looks and feels nice and strong and photos are clear and in focus.
I have not tried out the more manual modes as yet.
Only negative points......You have to be careful as the battery cover is a little delicate and you have to use a sony memory card (But play.com have some good deals on these).

Re: New digital camera
Seems like a very good compromise. Looked at a few reviews and this camera did very well for the most part. It may seem like a minor point to some but it has a separate viewfinder which means the user doesn't have to rely on the lcd display something which isn't always easy in bright light.
Enjoy
