Samsung STB and DVD Recorder

I have a Samsung STB linked to a Panasonic DVD Recorder (model DMR-EX75EB) which is then linked to the Philips TV; both by 21 pin scart. I also have a coaxial TV aerial going from wall socket to STB to DVD-R to TV.

On page 22 of the Panasonic manual there is a section headed Timer recording from Sat with Video+.

Quote "The DVD Recorder is not designed to control (switch or change channel) your satellite receiver. however it can be taught to recognize Video Plus+ codes for satellite stations."End quote.

Can something similar be arranged for the Samsung STB and if so how would I set up such a recording when using the Samsung STB and the Panasonic DVD Recorder?

How else can I set up timed recordings from the STB?

I got no real information with the Samsung STB and I have no idea where to look for any real information.

I suspect this won't be easy, and indeed is probably impossible.

First the DVD recorder would need to have some sort of "magic eye" type device that allows the recorder to transmit remote control type (infra red) signals, replicating the Samsung's remote controller. Secondly the DVD recorder needs to understand the specific codes needed by the Samsung to change to whatever channel is needed.

If you have a Panasonic dvd recorder. it should have a button called external link.
This will allow auto recordings of AV2, this should be the NTL box. If you don't watch pure garbage bye this I mean you only watch preset programmes and not just leave the box on 24/7. (messing up the ratings system)
Programme the samsung box for a tv show then turn the box off with the remote, put in a DVD-ram disk then press the external link button on the dvd recorder. if the recording didn't work you need to change the setting in the dvd recorder for external link. (edit = or use the HDD, stupid Panasonic site.)
If it did record you can play it back any time, even when the next programme starts recording, just press play.
To stop auto recording press external link again.
you've got up to 8 hours space on DVD (depends on model, disc sides. Bit rate setting and layers)
video plus is just algebra codec for the start time, date, channel number, finish time. the DVD recorder won't know what channel the Cable is on so it needs to learn. it does this by asking once per Tv channel normaly. (you have to tell it, what channel on the dvd recorder the cable is on, not the cable TV channel number, How many channels are there on Cable)

Page 50 of your manual explains the set up options for external link (Ext link).
option 2, I think, might be best.

Thanks for the help.

Now you hvae clarified the position re the DVD I feel more confident but I do have one further problem.

The Samsung box was delivered without an instruction book so I have no idea how to program it to record TV programs.

Any suggestions?

To do a test record

use the EPG to find the show, old style called "setting a reminder"
press the Guilde button
select all channels or the type of channel.
scroll to the show.
select the show
conferm the reminder.
and presss the TV button on the Cable remote.
turn of cable box with the remote.
set the recorder to HDD press EXT LINK
At the set time the Cable turns on.
If the DVD (PVR) is set up right the PVR starts recording after the CABLE starts broadcasting a signal.

Then repeat with a good show you like.

TA DA. no need for a IR blaster to be built in to the PVR

Can I watch Freeview channels from the Pany DVD recorder whilst recording a program using the external link?

Pressing the External Link button switches the Pany into standby mode. If I switch it back on will I unset the External Link?

The EXT Link has tricked ya its not in stand bye its just stopped out putting a video signal the units sitting ready to go in under 1 second if you using the DVD Ram, the lasers parked in the right spot just waiting the data to record.

Er to answer your question, you can do that yourself. as i don't have an answer, im affraid.
Just instead of changing channels try the Guide button on the DVD remote, a few times, if it comes up and the ext link stays on then the HDD drive or dvd ram should record as its not using the freeview tuner. If the guide comes up you might like to set it to record to the other device that ext link isn't using just to test that as well.
