sky bb - not if your on ie7 it seems

Just Got off the phone with David from sky tech support in Belfast.

According to David my connection keeps cutting out becuase I am using IE7 which does not work. Now I had (IE7 and Vista) , (IE7 and XP) , (IE6 and XP) and Internet explorer on PPC working for months on BT Broadband through a Dlink router but now that I'm with sky they say it's not going to work and that they and Ms are looking into the problem.

He tried to say that when the router is unplugged the IP changes and that this gives IE7 problems and things stop working.

My problem is that every hour (sometimes less) the internet cuts out. I can still access the router and sometimes it shows that it dos not have a bloody IP address. My line syncs at 2meg and bt say its working fine.

So in order to appease David from sky I have booted to xp and removed IE7, then I have installed firefox. Now every 10 mins or so my wireless connection is dropping and I need to connect to the router again......

Both my PPC and windows suffer this same problem.

Sky are utter tripe.

If I don't get this soretd by them within the week I'll be able to answer the following question:

How long does a sky router burn for on an open fire?

What complete & utter BS.

Which Sky BB service are you on? Base, Mid, Max, or Connect?

Where does the router plug in? BT Master, or an extension?

Have you tried using the test socket on the BT Master (remove the faceplate to reveal it)?

What are your connection stats when connected normally & when via the test socket? (sync speed, noise margin, etc.).

Can't see that advice being true - I would try and talk to someone else at Sky, if I was you.

Remove everything except the filter from your line and try again, if that fails plug directly into the test socket hidden behind the face plate on your primary socket (usually the first socket on your line as it comes into your property). If you still get issues then keep your connection in the test socket and ask for a full line test to be run.

The bt side of things is not the issue, at the moment I'm using an extension so that I can have the router next to the pc and using an ethernet lead to the pc on firefox on xp and it all works fine. The extension knocks 2-400kbits off the ync speed but at least I have a connection that does not cut out once an hour.

I can see that the wireless connection is appearing and dissapearing also though. This affects not only a pocket pc but a xp laptop on wireless, seems we may have a duff router.

Try turning off UPnP on the router - the Sky firmware allegedly has a bit of a bug wrt UPnP causing disconnects.

[would mean you'd have to manually set up port-forwarding though if you use e.g. Azureus etc.]

What's your noise margin like? Have you removed the ring wire? Thought about getting a filtered faceplate?
