Virgin Media's Bunyan agrees that it's not practical to offer everything to consumers, but stresses that the great strength of large portals is the size of audience they can deliver to.
"The classic question is what you focus on," he says. "Users have a wide variety of needs and they're naturally going to look in other places. If they didn't, we wouldn't have search toolbars. Our advantage is that when we push the envelope we can use our size, resources and base to provide users with great quality content."
In the first four days of Virgin Media's launch, the portal had around 15m page impressions from unique users, roughly twice the number of its combined legacy sites. Bunyan acknowledges that publicity around the launch has most likely pushed up that figure, but he's confident that a figure of 10.5m to 11m a month is achievable, which would place Virginmedia.com behind MSN and Yahoo! but in a comfortable position compared to the other top portals.
