Virgin to air Al Gore UGC channel

Virgin Media is to tap into the user-content generated market in a deal to air Al Gore's Current TV, the channel made up of viewer-created clips - four months after rival Sky struck a similar partnership. Current TV, branded "the TV network created by the people who watch it", is expected to launch on the Virgin Media platform in mid-March, according to a company spokeswoman.

It won't be like YouTube in the sense of showing videos of fat woman falling down holes or something. The channel will show documentaries or "pods" which are made by independent film makers, and are then put on the website so the best pods can be "green-lit" by the users and then shown on the TV channel. It also has professionally made shows, like a short daily show by Google about what is happening on the internet.

It was created as a kind of news channel, but with no influence by companies and with content generated by the public rather than mass media.
