Question Please Help my GF

My GF has a PC using XP......

She swears she used to be able to burn to disk and that the DVDRW drive extracts info.

However.....the 3.1/2 floppy wont add data either, Odd you think? Yep.

Ive talked to her about types of disk, and yes i made sure she tried the protection tab on the floppy and i got an earfull.

I got her to goto Device Manager and the DVD?CD ROM section is not there so she cant remove the DVDRW and install it again, how the hell can it work if its not there? How do you get this back in device manager?

I told her it might be BIOS settings but she told me she has never been in there, the cables in the PC apparently are correct.

Short of the floppy and DVDRW drive failing how the hell do we test it? She has no 2nd PC to check the drives but 2 failing at once is a bit strange.
HELP

Re: Please Help my GF

You say your gf never went into the BIOS, but did she/you check, that the drives were active

Re: Please Help my GF

No i havent i dont live with her. ive told her to pause the BIOS load up to see if they are enabled but if the DVDRW extracts data shouldnt it already be enabled in BIOS and active in Device Manager? Doesnt make sense to me.

Exclamation Re: Please Help my GF

Ok the deal so far is this....

Last night the DVDRW was not showing in Device Manager, today it is. She says this happens alot.

She can watch movies and listen to music via the DVD, but when she tries to rip anything off the disk it gets to about 20% in 20 Minutes and stalls, burning anything to disk is not working.

I tried to get her into BIOS but we fail everytime, tried F1, F2 and Del but none work.

Got her to download and run Belarac Advisor, there was no System name so dont know what make it is to get into the BIOS. On the list we looked under the DVD Devices and her DVD showed up but there was no product name showing.

Im lost as to what to do next, any ideas?

Re: Please Help my GF

I had a similar problem ages ago where the DVDrom drive kept disappearing from the Device Manager on a regular basis.

Updated IDE drivers for the motherboard cured the problem for me.
