At wits end
Hello all,
Newb here I'm afraid. Hope I can make some sense...
... Had ntl 1 mb and connected to my pc via ethernet for a couple of years...
Bought a linksys wrt54gs so I can accommodate another desktop and our laptop via wireless...
plumbed the modem to linksys and linksys to my pc with cables, but I can't get the internet
Have read a few posts here and there, done the power cycles correctly, pinged the router successfully, but can't get the router to ping out to the web - no response. Even though the internet light is on, with no flickering on the panel, I just can't get a connection...
I've had so many attempts to make it work, I'm lost and very frustrated. I'm confident my linksys settings are correct for ntl, but there must be something I'm missing.
Any help that you could offer would be greatly appreciated..
Justin

Re: At wits end
Are you getting a public IP address assigned to the router, that is the first thing to check?

Re: At wits end
Modem connected to the WAN port on the router?
Is it a Stand Alone Cable modem or is the Cable modem in a set top box

Re: At wits end
 to Cable Forum
First can we check if the problem is with connection of the PC to the router, or the router to the modem (or STB)?
With the PC connected by ethernet to the router, can you browse to the router's admin pages, usually 192.168.1.1? If you get the admin pages, or at least a log on screen we know that part is correct.
Not wishing to teach you to suck eggs, please confirm that when using the router, the only connection coming from the modem is the ethernet serving the router, no other USB or ethernet cables are connected. You must power off and on every time you swap cables.
Do you currently have a modem, or Set Top Box for your broadband, and how do you currently connect, USB or Ethernet?

Re: At wits end
If you get really stuck, there's a tool on the linksys site that's supposed to automagically configure your router for you... could give that a try, but going through the steps above should help diagnose the problem really.

Re: At wits end
Tried the No#1 usual issue.....switch of firewall? Might be blocking the IP request.
BTW - Welcome to CF!

Re: At wits end
Hello there
First off, thanks for all the replies!
Yes, I can communicate with the router admin pages on 198.168.1.1 etc...
Yes, the only cable out of the router is the ethernet...
Yes, it is a standalone modem, not a set top box...
Yes, modem connected to WAN port...
A public address? Is that the router ip?
I disable the firewall after I boot my machine up on a power cycle. Maybe I should try to disable it totally prior to a power cycle?
The router can't seem to connect to the net. I believe this because I can get an admin page to ping out to a web page, but receive no reponse. Strangely the "internet" light on the panel is stable.
If a neighbour is using an encrypted linksys within range, would I need to change the channel even if I was not using the wireless functionality at present? (Actually, this is the case) Maybe I should try that too.
Well, I appreciate your replies and time, thanks indeed.
Justin

Um, sorry - slightly embarrased... I meant to say this:
Yes, I can communicate with the router admin pages on 192.168.1.1 etc...
Yes, the only cable out of the modem is the ethernet...

Re: At wits end
Can you ping sites using their ip address (e.g. can you ping 212.58.224.131 rather than www.bbc.co.uk)?

Re: At wits end
If your PC is able to get the Admin pages of the router, then more than likely the PC's settings are OK. That leaves the settings between the router and modem.
We know the modem ethernet is OK because you are getting a connection between that and your PC. Can you confirm that the ethernet cable being used between the modem and router is Ok, perhaps swap that with the one you use between your PC and modem?
Can you do a factory reset on the Linksys, just in case you've played too much and it has lost some of it's default, auto settings?
Don't worry about the wireless for now, get it working wired, and then add in the wireless configuration later.

I would advise this as well, as when I got my wrt54gs it refused point blank to allow access to the net. Soon as I restored factory settings - hey presto... worked a charm
