what does this message meen
I have norton anti virus , and i often get an allert warning telling me someone is trying to send a virus to my computor and norton has stoped it. When i go to check on the norton tracker to see where it is from i get a message
The ip address 127.0.01 belongs to a computor on your local net work .
Does this mean that someone on ntl internet service is sending out viruses. thanks.

Re: what does this message meen
127.0.0.1 is your pc, not a pc on your local network.

You mean this ?

It's meaningless - it tells you nothing and is actually inaccurate as 127.0.0.1 is always your pc.

Be aware that this could be a warning that your pc is possibly trying to transmit a virus/worm but your HOSTS file has possibly been modified (by a legitimate anti spyware/virus) to state that any attempted connections to target ip should be re-routed to 127.0.0.1... 127.0.0.1 is called a loopback address by the way and is your machine.

Re: what does this message meen
Run a full virus scan and check the summary, then run a spyware scan as well as adware scan. (adaware, spybot s&d or a. n. other tool will do)

Re: what does this message meen
Some will clean, others will warn you of an infection. Of course part of this is for advertising their products, but the scans are free. Kaspersky IMO is the best, but does not clean, however the scan log will show you the path of the infected file(s) - and ones that are locked from the scanner (some of these a legitimate windows files, others may be malware - the secret is the filename and path). Bitdefender will clean in my experience, and produces a log too. Trendmicro is not as good as it used to be, and some users have problems with crashes - TBH I haven't used it for a while
Really they are for a second opinion, as any Av is only as good as its signatures, and they can put ones mind at ease. Also it is possible for false positives to occur with any scanner.
For anti-spyware scanner only you could try this:

Re: what does this message meen
Again here I find regular scans help.
Funny though ever since I got rid of Nortons Internet Security in 2003-2004 I've had much less virus attacks and trojans.
Either I've got better stuff for free, or for some reason I don't get hit as much.

Or your existing software is failing to pick up what Norton used too

I run AVG-Free at a quiet time of the day, daily, and have Windows Defender in the background, and run SpyBot S&D and Lavasoft AdAware SE Personal at least once a week - paranoid, you see.
Oh yeah, and a router firewall and Kerio software firewall - can't be too careful at my age, catching those pesky viruses.
