Just another marketing ploy.
Besides so many of us are still happily running windows 98 on old machines or have converted old machines to run lightweight OS's like Damn Small Linux etc
Microsoft needs to move those ppl off old windows versions and sucker them into a new term of sentence

I seriously doubt anyone running linux is gonna be suckered by a microsoft sales ploy also anyone still running 98 wasnt interested when the same offer was most likely made when xp was released and didnt change

Re: Vista possibly free
Ah, but did they buy Win98 in the few weeks before XP was released - I think that's the bit MS are worried about... or more likely they're trying to help the manufacturers who are worried that people won't be buying new PCs pre-loaded with XP just yet because Vista's release may be imminent.
You're right about Linux users falling for this... not sure that Microsoft's reputation amongst Linux users is that impressive

Not quite true : Microsoft has released some good and some quite awful software....
I dont mind microsft at all...
It's been getting better over the years but I look at in terms of machine spec/OS vs personal productivity...
The two seem directly correlated...
ie It takes you 2 days to write a report running word on windows 3.11 however it also takes 2 days to write the report on a quad processor xeon windows super 2008 edition.

That also depends on the progression of technology : There was very little video encoding happening in 1992

I think what Zingle was getting at is if you are word processing, then whatever CPU speed have (right from 4.77 MHz up), the CPU is going to be spending at least 90% of it's time waiting for user response.

Yup and for the 10% of the time the machine does have to do something ?
Anyway dont worry we and Zingle buddy were not flaming - I think we know each now to not bother ourselves with such pettyness
Afterall I must show a great deal of respect for his dedication on these boards.
