mangled RJ45 cable

Hi, my housemate just ran over my RJ45 cable with the hoover and it's churned a nice 1 inch wide hole into the shielding, exposing the wires. Inside are loads of multicoloured wires and one of them has a few nicks and scrapes but otherwise they look unscathed and my connection still works.

I have gone over the hole with gaffa tape. Is this good enough and is there any danger of the shielding being broken?

Thank you!

Re: mangled RJ45 cable

If it works, then it will be ok. The shielding is a bit OTT for Cat 5 cables...

Re: mangled RJ45 cable

If it's still working, breathe a sigh of relief, and ignore it for now. I'd buy a new one though as who knows what hidden damage there might be. The strands are so fine they'd easily snap from abuse.

Re: mangled RJ45 cable

Cheers guys. It was a very cheap cable anyway so I can easily buy a new one but I think for now i'll leave it.

Buy your housemate some Hoovering lessons (here's hoping they don't drive a car through the week )

Lol, his car is currently broken down but he is a better car driver, than a hoover driver.

There are different degrees of "working".

Assuming he's male, it'll be "man hoovering" - don't move anything out of the way, just hoover the middle of the room (he thinks a "crevice tool" is a sex toy), don't worry about small objects such as coins, cables, Lego, cats...

Because none of the floor is visible when it comes round to the quarterly hoover?

Only because my room is so full of PC stuff, CDs, books

No seriously, it was last done about a week ago, and probably needs doing again, only really a few magazines on the floor

Highly dangerous too. I once slipped on the Radio Times - foot went from under me and down I went. Backwards. Just missed the coffee table, otherwise it would have been Eastenders.

Re: mangled RJ45 cable

Buy yourself lot's of cable and put it somewhere where you won't fall over it.
As you've noticed, Cat5 cable doesnt like twists and can break easily.
You can get some good lengths cheaply from Cable Universe.
